Le Jardin, Porto Pollo: Exploring a Corsican Rocky Labyrinth

Le Jardin is an expansive rocky site off Porto Pollo, offering a multi-layered dive experience. The shallower sections are characterised by vast rock formations, creating a labyrinth of small caves and wide stone slabs ideal for leisurely explorations. This area lies within the 10-meter depth range, making it accessible for extended bottom times.

Descending deeper, the site transforms into a plateau system marked by significant faults in the cliff face. These topographical features create numerous hiding spots and micro-habitats for marine life. The afternoon sun often penetrates these deeper sections, illuminating the cracks and crevices, which enhances the visibility of camouflaged species.

At its deeper end, below 27 metres and extending to 35 metres, Le Jardin reveals a unique feature: one of the rare branches of black coral (Antipathes) found in Corsica. This deep section is less frequented, preserving an environment rich in marine biodiversity. It is here you encounter more substantial pelagic species and often large schools of fish.

The resident fauna is a strong draw, especially in the deeper zones. You'll find dentis (Dentex dentex) and sizeable groupers (Epinephelus marginatus) moving through the rocky terrain. Red gorgonians (Paramuricea clavata) add vibrant colour to the underwater landscape, contrasting with the dark branches of the black coral.

In the shallower rocky areas, the diversity shifts. Octopus (Octopus vulgaris) are often seen, along with various crustaceans hiding in the crevices. Large schools of saddled sea bream (Oblada melanura) and salema (Sarpa salpa) patrol the open water, while conger eels (Conger conger) and forkbeards (Phycis phycis) inhabit the darker recesses of the caves and overhangs.

Predatory species like dentis are present, actively hunting in the schools of smaller fish. You might also encounter common seabream (Diplodus sargus) and, on occasion, large sunfish (Mola mola), which sometimes visit the site for cleaning. These interactions highlight the site's ecological importance as both a habitat and a feeding ground.

The expansive nature of Le Jardin means that a single dive will only cover a fraction of its offerings. The different depth profiles and rocky structures invite repeated exploration, each dive potentially revealing new passages, hidden corners, or resident species specific to that section of the site.
