Soldat, Marseille: Exploring the underwater fault

Soldat, known locally as La Faille du Soldat or Pierre A Joseph Soldat, is a distinct geological formation just off the coast of Marseille. Unlike the area's numerous wrecks, the draw here is the natural topography: a dramatic rocky fault with an arête that plunges towards deeper sections. From the moment you descend, you'll feel the contours of the rock face guiding your dive, revealing ledges and overhangs that create a dynamic profile rather than a simple, flat wall.

The dive often begins along the main fault line, which provides a natural path downwards. One of the primary attractions is a vibrant wall draped in red gorgonians, which you can follow to approximately 40 metres. As you navigate these depths, the light shifts, and the density of the gorgonians creates a tapestry of colour against the rock, offering numerous photographic opportunities and a sense of depth that draws you further into the site's unique structure.

Beyond the main gorgonian wall, the seabed flattens out slightly, where a large anchor and its chain rest, a testament to past maritime activity in the area. This area provides a natural turning point for the deeper sections of the dive and allows for a change in perspective. The presence of the anchor adds a historical element to the natural exploration, blending the geological with a touch of human history without being the primary focus of the site.

The topography of Soldat is particularly varied, featuring numerous passages and changes in relief that prevent the dive from feeling like a continuous, unvarying wall. This intricate structure creates a habitat for a range of marine life. You'll often find conger eels (Conger conger) tucked into crevices, their watchful eyes following your progress, and lobsters (Homarus gammarus) seeking shelter within the rocky overhangs.

Look closely along the walls and within the cracks, and you'll spot anthias (Anthias anthias) schooling, their bright colours adding movement to the underwater landscape. These small, schooling fish often hover just off the main reef, benefiting from the shelter and food sources provided by the complex geology. The site's varied depths and relief ensure that there are always new corners to explore and new life to observe, whether you're focusing on macro details or wider reef panoramas.
