Dive Base Academy

Established in 1991, Dive Base Academy is a long-standing PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Centre (IDC) situated in Hurghada. Located within the Sindbad Club, the centre provides a structured environment for divers looking to progress through the PADI system or simply explore the Red Sea's diverse marine ecosystems.

The academy is positioned just 15 minutes from Hurghada airport, making it a convenient base for those staying at the 4-star deluxe Sindbad Club. From here, you can access a variety of environments, ranging from shallow reef flats to deep-water wrecks and drift dives.

As an Instructor Development Centre, the academy is geared towards high-level training, supporting divers from their first bubbles through to the PADI Divemaster and Instructor levels. The facility includes a large, air-conditioned classroom for theory work and a dedicated maintenance garage for kit servicing.

The centre operates with a professional focus, offering a wide range of PADI Specialty courses and professional training. For those looking to begin their journey, the academy also provides Discover Scuba Diving and Intro Dive programmes.

The training programme is extensive, covering the full spectrum of PADI certifications. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or the PADI Scuba Diver course, progressing through to Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver.

For more experienced divers, the academy offers a variety of Specialty courses, including PADI Deep Diver, Drift Diver, Wreck Diver, and Night Diver. The centre is also a hub for professional development, hosting PADI Divemaster and Instructor Development Courses, alongside EFR (Emergency First Response) training.

The centre operates three boats for its daily excursions. These vessels depart between 9:00 and 9:30, with returns typically scheduled between 15:30 and 16:30. One unique offering is the Sindbad Quest, a glass-bottom boat designed for underwater observation.

All boats are equipped with medical oxygen and first aid kits to ensure safety during trips. For those opting for full-day excursions, snacks, lunch, and non-alcoholic drinks are provided on board.

The academy maintains a substantial inventory of kit, including 120 complete Aqualung sets available for hire. Divers can rent full sets or individual items such as masks, fins, wetsuits, dive computers, compasses, and torches for night dives.

For gas management, the centre provides aluminium cylinders in various volumes, including 6, 10, 12, and 15-litre options, available in both DIN and INT. Nitrox is available for divers, and the centre is equipped with medical oxygen on its boats.

The surrounding reefs are home to a vast array of marine life, including various species of reef fish, sharks, and rays. You can regularly encounter grey reef sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos), reef sharks (Carcharhinus), and blue-spotted stingrays (Hypanus americanus). Turtles are a frequent sight, alongside larger pelagics like tuna (Thunnus) and jacks (Carangidae).

In the coral gardens, look for colourful inhabitants such as butterflyfish (Chaetodon), damselfish, and various species of anthias (Anthias). The reef structure is built upon a beautiful foundation of hard corals and soft corals, providing a home for surgeonfish (Acanthuridae), unicornfish (Naso), and parrotfish (Calotomus).

Macro enthusiasts will find plenty to observe, including nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), octopus (Octopus vulgaris), and various scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae). You may also spot frogfish (Antennarius), moray eels (Muraenidae), and different types of rays (Batoidea) amongst the crevices of the reef.

Diving in this area is characterised by various environments, from sheltered reef flats to more exposed sites like Banana Reef, where currents can be strong. These currents often make drift diving the most natural way to experience the site.

Night diving is a standard part of the local dive offering, allowing you to see the reef transform as nocturnal species emerge.
