The reefs around Hurghada are teeming with life, from large pelagics to colourful reef fish. You will frequently encounter various species of rays, including blue-spotted stingrays and feathertail rays, alongside turtles and large Jacks (Carangidae). Schools of fish such as Anthias (Anthias), Glassfish (Atherinidae), and various species of snapper and grouper (Epinephelus) populate the coral gardens and pinnacles.

Large predators are also a regular feature for those diving the outer reefs and walls. It is common to see Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), Tuna (Thunnus), and various reef sharks (Carcharhinus). Hammerhead sharks are also noted in the area, providing a significant highlight for experienced divers.

For those interested in macro life, the crevices and soft corals offer endless discovery. The sites are home to a diverse range of nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), various species of moray eels (Muraenidae), and Octopus (Octopus vulgaris). You can also find scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae), lionfish, and various species of anemone fish living amongst the gorgonians and soft corals.

Diving in this region is subject to varying current conditions depending on the site. While many lagoon areas remain calm, sites like Carless Reef, El Minya, and Erg Abu Ramada can experience strong and unpredictable currents, making them more suitable for experienced divers.

Seasonal variations affect the environment, but the area remains a reliable destination for year-round diving. Divers should always be prepared for drift conditions, especially when visiting the outer reef systems or the deeper pinnacles.
