Manila has four terminals, with no airside connection between them. Your onward flight to Coron, Dumaguete or Bohol may leave from another building and the bit in between is Manila traffic.

How long is your layover?
2 hrs
In the same terminal, you can make it. Between terminals, you cannot.
- ⚠️ The four terminals have NO airside corridor between them. Changing buildings means exiting, clearing immigration, collecting your bags, crossing the city, checking in again and clearing security again. Allow at least three hours, or four if your tickets are separate.
- Within the same terminal, on an international-to-international connection, a transfer desk handles you before immigration; you then clear security again. One and a half hours is a realistic margin.
- The minimums shown by booking systems one hour for international-to-international are theoretical floors. They do not allow for the immigration queue or the traffic.
- Regardez votre compagnie avant de croire à une correspondance : depuis mars 2026, AirAsia a déplacé ses vols internationaux au Terminal 1 mais laissé ses vols intérieurs au Terminal 2. Rejoindre Cebu, Coron ou Puerto Princesa après un long-courrier AirAsia signifie donc changer de bâtiment, par la route.
2–5 hrs
The terminals offer little, but what they do offer is free if you know where to look.
- Airport Wi-Fi is free in every terminal. It is noticeably more stable in Terminal 3 than elsewhere, so do not risk an important call if you are in Terminal 2 or Terminal 4.
- Water fountains are airside: in Terminal 1 by gate 5, and in Terminal 3 near gates G108 and H3. Refill your bottle rather than buying another drink at the counter.
- Free charging points sit near some gates, including gate 7 in Terminal 1 and near gates G105 and H5 in Terminal 3.
- ⚠️ There are no free showers and no proper rest area: you have terminal seats. Paid luggage storage is available in Terminals 2 and 3, with opening hours varying between counters.
5–10 hrs
Getting out is simple on paper traffic is the real constraint.
- VISA REQUIRED you can enter the Philippines visa-free for a short stay with most European passports, provided your passport is valid for at least six months and you hold an onward ticket.
- ⚠️ You must also complete eTravel ONLINE before arrival. It is free, takes a few minutes and is not optional including when you only leave the terminal to change buildings.
- ⚠️ Visa-free transit covers ONLY passengers remaining airside in the SAME terminal. The moment you need to change buildings, you enter the Philippines and complete the formalities that go with it.
- The airport runs no city tour. You make your own way to Intramuros or the bay, and journey time depends entirely on the hour: in Manila, the same distance can take twenty minutes or one hour.
10 hrs +
You sleep opposite Terminal 3 and can walk there, which is unusual in Manila.
- VISA REQUIRED Newport City’s hotel district sits directly opposite Terminal 3, linked by an air-conditioned pedestrian walkway of two hundred and twenty metres with moving walkways. With dive kit, it is infinitely preferable to a taxi in traffic.
- Several hotels are grouped here, from transit accommodation to higher-end addresses, all within a few minutes’ walk of each other.
- NO VISA airside in Terminal 3, you can rent cabins and bunks by the hour. ⚠️ You can fit in there, but you will not sleep properly. Use it when your passport prevents you from going out, not as a room.
- Do not count on an airline-funded night: no such scheme is documented here for a layover you chose.
What catches travellers out
Four terminals, with no corridor between them
This is Manila’s central trap, with no real equivalent at the other major Asian hubs. Every building change is a full landside exit, formalities included, followed by a traffic-dependent journey twenty to fifty minutes according to the terminals and the hour.
Visa-free transit does not cover a terminal change
The arrangement exists, but it is for passengers who remain airside in the same terminal. Many assume they are covered, then find at the desk that they are entering the Philippines. If your itinerary changes buildings, you enter: check that your passport allows it.
The inter-terminal shuttle is free but irregular
It exists, it costs nothing, and its frequency is unreliable. Do not build a connection around it: if time is short, take a taxi, and the taxi is subject to traffic.
Why not wait it out in peace?

You can buy access to several Manila lounges without a card or status and they are the only place you can have a shower.
Clear up the first misconception: these lounges are not reserved for business-class passengers. You can buy entry whatever airline or cabin you are flying.
NAIA has no free showers. After a long-haul flight and before a morning domestic departure, this is the only way to arrive on the island washed.
⚠️ Check the TERMINAL before buying. The four buildings do not connect airside: a Terminal 1 lounge is no use if you depart from Terminal 3. Use a lounge in your departure terminal, not the one with the better reviews.
You cannot buy entry at the door for Philippine Airlines lounges or those of major foreign airlines: access comes with your ticket or status.
Expect the equivalent of an airport sit-down meal for a few quiet hours, including a shower.

Walk from Terminal 3 via the air-conditioned walkway Manila’s practical stopover address.
- The covered two hundred and twenty metre walkway, with moving walkways, avoids both taxi and traffic. That is the main point when you are hauling twenty-five kilograms.
- ⚠️ It starts at Terminal 3. If you arrive at another terminal, you must reach Terminal 3 first which puts you back in the traffic.

- Choose it when your layover warrants a proper night rather than a few hours.
- Like the rest of the district, it requires immigration on the way out and back, including eTravel.

The diver’s reflex
Your flight to Palawan or Dumaguete leaves from another terminal
Coron, Puerto Princesa, Dumaguete, Bohol and Cebu are domestic flights, and they may not leave from the building where you land. As nothing connects airside, you must exit, clear immigration, collect your dive bag, cross the traffic, check in again and clear security again. Check your onward terminal BEFORE booking, and allow three to four hours not the sixty minutes shown by the search engine.
Your cabin bag full of batteries will be opened
Philippine security gives bags containing potentially hazardous materials a second inspection and that is precisely how a diver’s bag looks on the scanner: torches, strobes, spare batteries and a housing. It is not a problem; it is time. Pack them so you can open, show and close the bag again in two minutes, and arrive early.
Complete eTravel at home, not in the queue
Even without a visa, entering the Philippines requires prior online registration. It is free and quick, but it needs a connection and a few minutes two things you do not have after a long-haul flight when a domestic departure is waiting. You need it even when you only leave the terminal to change buildings.
