Island Diving Center

Island Diving Center is a PADI 5 Star Dive Resort situated in the West End area of Roatan, Honduras. Its location at the Brisas Del Mar hotel places you just minutes away from the primary reef walls and local wreck sites that define this region.

The centre is built around a commitment to safety and high-level education, catering to a spectrum of divers from those completing their first Open Water Diver course to technical divers exploring deep wrecks. With a focus on small groups and meticulous planning, the operation is designed to handle everything from relaxed reef cruises to advanced technical expeditions.

The team is led by highly experienced professionals, including Luis Miguel, a PADI Course Director with over 16,000 logged dives. This level of expertise ensures that training, from basic skills to professional development, is handled with a deep understanding of dive theory and practical application.

Instruction is available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The centre provides a wide range of professional pathways, including Divemaster and Instructor Development Courses (IDC), making it a destination for those looking to advance their careers in the industry.

The course catalogue is extensive, covering the full PADI progression from Open Water Diver through to Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, and Divemaster. For those looking to specialise, the centre offers PADI specialties including Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, Peak Performance Buoyancy, and Night Diver.

Technical training is a significant part of the curriculum, with courses ranging from Tec 40 and Tec 45 to Tec 65 and Tec Trimix. The centre also provides specialised training in Sidemount, Dry Suit diving, and underwater photography and videography, alongside environmental courses such as Shark Conservation and Dive Against Debris.

The fleet consists of three distinct vessels to suit different diving needs. The Seaduction is a fast boat powered by twin 300HP engines, capable of carrying 20 divers, making it ideal for reaching further sites efficiently.

The Queen is a versatile vessel with a capacity for 12 divers, while the Princess is a more compact option designed for 8 divers, making it particularly well-suited for training sessions. All boats are equipped with covered areas for shade, secure storage for your equipment, and easy-access ladders for entry and exit.

Onshore, the centre is well-equipped to handle the needs of both recreational and technical divers. Nitrox is available for use, and the facility includes a dedicated blending station for both Nitrox and Trimix.

Full equipment hire is available on-site for those not travelling with their own kit. The facility also features freshwater showers, dedicated rinsing tanks for camera equipment, and dry zones to keep your belongings secure and dry between dives.

The reefs are vibrant ecosystems teeming with life. You will regularly encounter large groupers (Epinephelus), moray eels (Muraenidae), and various species of reef fish. Larger pelagics such as spotted eagle rays (Aetobatus), Caribbean reef sharks (Carcharhinus), and nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum) are part of the local environment, alongside great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda).

The hard and soft coral structures provide the backbone of the habitat, with sightings of sea fans (Gorgoniidae), black coral, and various sponges (Porifera) including barrel sponges. You may also spot sea turtles, including green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) and loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta), patrolling the reef.

For those interested in macro life, the sites offer plenty of detail. Look for octopuses (Octopus vulgaris), spiny lobsters (Palinuridae), and various crustaceans. Smaller creatures like seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae), and nudibranchs add layers of interest to the shallower reef sections.

Diving in Roatan is generally characterised by minimal currents, though sites like Texas & Pablos can experience moderate currents that make for more dynamic dives. The best time to visit is between March and September, when the seas are calmer and visibility is at its highest.

During the months of October to January, divers should be prepared for occasional wind. Visibility typically ranges between 24 and 30 metres, providing excellent sightlines for both reef and wreck exploration.
