The reefs around Roatan are teeming with life, from large pelagics to colourful reef fish. You will frequently encounter schools of Jack (Carangidae), creole wrasse, and various Snapper (Lutjanus). Larger residents include Great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), Grouper (Epinephelus), and Nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum), with sightings of eagle rays (Aetobatus) and even sharks like Caribbean reef sharks being part of the local experience.

For macro enthusiasts, the area offers incredible diversity. You can find Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani), garden eels (Gorgasia), and various species of shrimp, including cleaner shrimp (Lysmata). Look closely in the crevices for Seahorse (Hippocampus kuda), mantis shrimp, and various species of octopus (Octopus vulgaris).

The hard and soft coral structures provide the essential backdrop for this biodiversity. You will see massive barrel sponges, various sea sponges (Porifera), sea fans (Gorgoniidae), and brain corals. The reef is also home to many crustaceans, including spiny lobster (Palinuridae) and various species of crab (Brachyura).

Diving in Roatan is generally characterised by calm waters on the north-west side of the island, though the south side can experience more swell. Currents can range from very light, making sites like Mandy’s Eel Garden ideal for beginners, to robust and predictable drift currents at sites like Texas & Pablos or the West End Wall.

Many of the best sites, such as the Seamounts or the West End Wall, are subject to stronger currents that may require more experienced buoyancy control and navigation skills.
