Freediving Explorations

Located in Baja California Sur, Mexico, Freediving Explorations operates at the intersection of athletic training and marine exploration. The centre specialises in high-end freediving expeditions, focusing on the unique ecosystems of the Sea of Cortez and the deep cenotes of the Yucatán.

The centre is led by two highly distinguished figures in the freediving community: Petra Oberucova, a Master Instructor and marine interaction specialist, and Carlos Coste, a 12-time world record holder. Their expertise ensures that every session, from introductory breath-hold training to advanced coaching, is grounded in professional safety and physiological understanding.

The training programme covers the entire spectrum of freediving progression. You can begin with introductory breath-hold sessions or move through to Advanced and Master certifications. For those looking to refine their technique, the centre offers private coaching and specialised line training.

The centre provides full kit hire for those who do not wish to travel with their own equipment, including wetsuits, fins, masks, snorkels, weight belts, and lanyards. For safety and organisation during excursions, buoys and lines are also provided.

The Sea of Cortez is a sanctuary for large pelagics. During the spring, you can witness massive aggregations of Mobula rays (Mobula mobular and Mobula thurstoni). You are also likely to encounter dolphins, including bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, spinning dolphins, and Pacific white-sided dolphins, alongside California sea lions and various shark species.

The Sea of Cortez presents variable open-water conditions, requiring adaptability to changing currents. Seasonal planning is essential, as the spring period is the primary window for observing Mobula ray aggregations.
