The Dive Gurus

Located in Marina Palmira, The Dive Gurus provides access to some of the most biodiverse waters in Mexico, primarily focused around the islands of La Paz and the Espiritu Santo Marine Park. This protected area is one of the most effectively managed marine parks in the world, offering a reliable environment for both novice divers and technical explorers.

With over 22 years of experience operating in the Sea of Cortez, the centre has established itself as a specialist expedition leader. Their expertise is frequently utilised by international institutions, including the BBC Natural History Unit, Netflix, and National Geographic, for underwater filming and scientific surveys.

As a PADI 5 Star Instructor Development Facility, the centre is equipped to train divers from their first Open Water certification through to professional Instructor level. They offer a comprehensive range of professional training, including Divemaster, Assistant Instructor, and full Instructor Development Courses (IDC).

Safety and professionalism are central to their operations, with a strict diver-to-guide ratio of no more than four divers per guide. For those pursuing technical specialities, they provide advanced training through PADI, IANTD, and TDI, covering everything from Nitrox and Deco Procedures to Trimix and Sidemount configurations.

The training programme spans the entire spectrum of scuba diving. Beginners can start with PADI Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver courses, while those looking to progress can enrol in Rescue Diver or Divemaster programmes.

For technical divers, the centre is the only specialist school in the Sea of Cortez. They offer a deep catalogue of technical certifications through PADI, TDI, and IANTD, including TEC 40, TEC 45, TEC 50, Trimix, and Sidemount diving. They also provide specialised training for gas blenders, compressor operators, and oxygen providers via DAN.

The centre operates a custom-built 26-foot dive boat powered by a Honda outboard motor, designed to carry a maximum of 6 divers. The vessel is set up for comfort and efficiency, providing lunch and refreshments during the day.

To support environmental goals, the boat uses dedicated ice chests for water and beverages to eliminate the need for single-use plastics. For safety, the boat is equipped with a VHF radio, handheld VHF, lifejackets, and a DAN Coast Guard First Aid Kit.

The centre provides full equipment rental, featuring high-end brands such as Fourth Element, Apeks, and Shearwater computers. Rental packages include regulators, integrated weight BCDs, fins, masks, booties, and suits.

Nitrox is available for all guided dives and is included in all training courses. The facility is also equipped to support technical divers, including rebreather users, and offers gas blending services.

The marine life in the La Paz region is diverse and highly seasonal. During the months of July to October, you can find giant mantas at Cerralvo Island and Punta Norte. The area is also a regular haunt for California sea lions, particularly at Los Islotas and San Rafalito.

In the open water and along the walls, divers often encounter pelagic fish, Mobula Mantas, and various schooling bait fish. The reefs and sea mounts support a healthy population of reef fish, Grouper (Epinephelus), and Snapper (Lutjanus), alongside colourful corals and black corals.

For those interested in macro life, the seabed and rock formations host a variety of smaller creatures. You can find Octopus (Octopus vulgaris), Seahorse (Hippocampus kuda), Nudibranch (Chromodoris willani), and Frogfish (Antennarius), as well as garden eels, sea stars, and sea urchins.

Diving conditions vary depending on the specific site. While many sites are suitable for novices, the La Salvatierra Wreck can experience hard currents, requiring more experienced handling.

Seasonal availability also affects certain locations; for example, San Rafalito is closed from June through August. Technical sites like Neptunes Throne extend from 50 metres down to 118 metres, requiring appropriate gas planning and certification.
