Palapas Ventana

Palapas Ventana is an ocean-adventure resort in La Ventana Bay, with the sea at the front door and a distinctly small-town Mexican feel behind it. You can spend the day on the water, then come back to a pool, a terrace, a meal and somewhere to sit without having to turn the evening into another expedition.

English and Spanish are spoken by the hotel team, so you can deal with the practicalities of your stay in English from arrival onwards. The setting suits divers who want more than a bed between excursions, but who are not looking for a large, anonymous complex either.

The resort opened in 2003 and combines simple casita accommodation with a useful spread of water sports, food and outdoor space. It is a place for an active holiday, although nobody will object if your main activity after breakfast is finding a shaded chair.

You are in La Ventana, Mexico, on the southeastern side of the La Paz area and between La Ventana and El Sargento. The resort sits directly on the seafront, with a private beach area and La Ventana Beach around 150 metres away. Sea views are part of the setting rather than a distant promise.

The location keeps you close to the bay and its water-based activities. Snorkelling, windsurfing, kitesurfing, fishing and boat outings all fit naturally into the local landscape, while the resort itself gives you a place to return to when the wind, sun or water has done enough for one day.

For meals away from the resort, Radaroma is around 0.1 mile away and Deep Blue around 0.3 mile. Playa Central is about 0.6 mile away, while La Herradura Bar & Grill is roughly 0.9 mile from the property. Joess Garage is about 1 mile away.

The casitas are compact, self-contained rooms with air conditioning, a fan, a private entrance and a private bathroom with a walk-in shower. Sea views give the rooms their strongest sense of place, while tiled or marble-style floors make them practical after a day spent outdoors. Daily housekeeping keeps the basics in order, and a seating area gives you somewhere to settle rather than treating the bed as the only piece of furniture that matters.

For two people, the Casita Regular keeps things straightforward, with a super-king bed. The Casita Especial is the more useful choice for three, with a single bed alongside the super-king. That extra sleeping arrangement makes it the sensible option for a small family or a trio of friends, provided you are comfortable sharing a relatively close-quarters casita.

The rooms are air-conditioned, which matters in Baja when you return warm, salty and ready for a proper reset. A socket beside the bed, towels, linen, toiletries and a hairdryer cover the ordinary practicalities. Children of all ages are welcome; cots and extra beds can be requested, depending on the accommodation selected.

El Anzuelo is the resort’s restaurant, set on a terrace and serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The cooking brings together fresh seafood, traditional Mexican dishes and international fare, so you can stay with local flavours or take the less adventurous route when a long day in the water has emptied the tank.

Freshly caught fish is prepared grilled, fried, sashimi-style or as ceviche. That is the detail to remember when choosing where to eat: the kitchen works around the catch rather than treating seafood as a decorative word on the menu.

Breakfast is included and covers vegetarian and vegan choices. The property also has a bar and an on-site coffee house, with fruit, wine and champagne available. Packed lunches can be arranged for days when the boat, the beach or an excursion takes priority over sitting down at midday.

An infinity pool, a sun terrace and a beachfront setting give you three easy ways to spend a non-diving afternoon: swim, stretch out or walk down to the water. Spa facilities, a hot tub and massage services add a more deliberate recovery option, with full-body massage, manicures, pedicures and beauty services also available.

Yoga is offered for a slower start or a gentler finish to the day. Free bicycle use, bicycle tours and walking tours let you explore beyond the resort, while the games room, table tennis, board games and film nights provide uncomplicated evening distractions. No need to organise a grand cultural programme when a film and a cold drink will do the job.

The water-sports side is substantial without being limited to diving. You can snorkel, windsurf, kitesurf, fish or join a boat excursion. Cooking classes, wildlife observation and outings to an island, a waterfall, a market or a snorkelling location add options for travelling companions who want a different sort of day.

An airport shuttle is available and can be arranged with the hotel. The resort also has free private parking on site, with no reservation needed, which is useful if you are driving through Baja rather than arriving by air. Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, and a safety deposit box is available for valuables.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 18:30, and you need to tell the property your expected arrival time in advance. Check-out is from 07:00 to 11:00. Cash is accepted for payment, so plan accordingly before arriving at this relatively small coastal base.

The practical services include daily housekeeping, laundry, packed lunches and a shared lounge with television. The resort has an outdoor fireplace, outdoor dining furniture and terraces for the parts of the day when sitting outside is preferable to retreating indoors. Pets are not allowed.
