We Do Ocean

Located in the fishing village of Padang Bai on the east coast of Bali, We Do OCEAN is more than a standard dive centre. It is a dedicated marine protection organisation born from a reef restoration initiative started by local instructors in 2020. The centre operates as a collaboration between the local dive centre and the We Do OCEAN e.V. association based in Germany.

The location is defined by its proximity to the Wallace Line, a deep oceanic trench between Bali and Lombok. This positioning ensures that the area is constantly fed by nutrient-rich currents, supporting a highly productive marine environment. This biological activity is the foundation of the centre's work in building resilient coral ecosystems.

The organisation is built on a foundation of scientific rigour and community integration. They utilise the MARRS Reef Star method to restore coral habitats, working alongside scientists from the University of Constance and local partners like Blue Harmony Bali. This approach ensures that every restoration project contributes to long-term ecological stability.

Beyond the water, the team is deeply involved in local welfare and environmental management. Their work extends to waste management systems for thousands of local households and animal welfare programmes. The centre’s leadership is heavily comprised of local residents, ensuring that marine conservation efforts provide stable employment and support for the Padang Bai community.

The reefs around Padang Bai are characterised by high biodiversity, supported by the constant influx of nutrients from the deep ocean. You will find a variety of reef fish and healthy coral colonies that form the backbone of this ecosystem. The presence of large schools of barracuda and reef sharks is a regular highlight for divers.

Macro life and smaller inhabitants thrive within the complex structures of the restored reefs. The combination of scientific restoration and natural currents creates a stable environment for various species to settle and grow.

In the deeper waters and along the currents, you may encounter dolphins and larger pelagic visitors. The stability of the water temperature and the nutrient flow ensures a consistent presence of diverse marine life throughout the year.

The diving environment is heavily influenced by the proximity to the Wallace Line, which brings moderate, nutrient-rich currents to the area. These currents are essential for the health of the corals but require divers to be comfortable with moving water.

Water conditions remain relatively stable year-round due to the deep oceanic trench nearby. This provides a consistent environment for both the natural reef and the ongoing coral restoration projects.
