Freediving Koh Samui

Based on the island of Koh Samui, Freediving Koh Samui provides a dedicated space for those looking to develop their breath-hold capabilities. Rather than the long ferry crossings often required to reach the best diving in the Gulf of Thailand, this centre utilises speedboats to access premier sites directly.

The focus here is on technical mastery and physiological control. Whether you are looking for a single introductory session or a structured progression through advanced levels, the approach is centred on individual coaching and safety.

The centre is led by Diego Pauel, a certified Apnea Total instructor and rescuer. The teaching philosophy prioritises precise technique and breath management, ensuring that every diver understands the mechanics of their ascent and descent.

To maintain a high standard of safety and personalised attention, the instructor operates with a strict ratio of maximum three students per guide. Instruction is delivered in English, making it accessible to the international diving community in the region.

The curriculum covers a full range of apnea skills through the Apnea Total certification system. Beginners can start with a Discovery Freediving session, followed by the Level 1 Beginner Freediving Course and the Level 2 Advanced Freediving Course.

For those seeking more intensive training, the centre offers private 1-on-1 coaching or private duo sessions. They also provide specialised coaching for already certified divers and private charters for spearfishing.

The centre operates via speedboat, allowing for efficient transit to the offshore sites. This method avoids the two-hour ferry journeys typical of the area, ensuring more time is spent in the water rather than in transit.

Full equipment hire is included with all training programmes. This includes a wetsuit, mask, long fins, a weight belt, a dive computer, and a lanyard.

Safety is a priority on all outings, with emergency oxygen available on board to manage any incidents during the sessions.

The marine life around Sail Rock and Koh Tao is diverse, with many large pelagics passing through the area. You may encounter schools of batfish (Platax), barracuda (Sphyraena), and various species of reef shark (Carcharhinus). During the window from March to May, whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) are occasionally spotted in the region.

On the reef, look for a variety of colourful residents including snapper (Lutjanidae), trevally, and several species of grouper (Epinephelinae). You will also find turtles (Cheloniidae), including the hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), navigating the coral structures.

The benthic environment is rich with hard coral (Scleractinia) and soft coral (Alcyonacea), providing a home for smaller inhabitants. Keep an eye out for octopus (Octopus vulgaris), moray eels (Muraenidae), and various species of stingrays (Myliobatiformes) resting on the seabed.

For those interested in macro life, the reefs host a range of smaller creatures such as nudibranchs, shrimp (Caridea), and various species of butterflyfish (Chaetodon). You might also spot pipefish (Syngnathidae) or interesting crustaceans like crabs (Brachyura) among the reef crevices.

The best period for visiting the area, particularly for those hoping to see whale sharks (Rhincodon typus), is between March and May. During these months, the conditions are generally optimal for offshore excursions.
