Wreck of the Saint-Dominique, Marseille: upright sailing ship

The Saint-Dominique wreck lies in the northern part of Marseille’s rade, a short boat ride from the Vieux-Port or Pointe Rouge. As you descend, the imposing outline of the 70-meter steel-hulled sailing ship appears through the blue, standing upright on a gently sloping sandy bottom. The upper structures of the open deck are around 25-27 meters, with the keel resting on the sand at approximately 33 meters, giving you a considerable vertical profile to explore.

This dive starts with a free descent directly onto the wreck. Once you reach the deck level, you can begin exploring the vessel's largely intact hull. The masts were cut after the 1897 sinking, but the structural integrity of the ship remains, allowing for clear navigation along its length. You'll find yourself moving through open areas and past skeletal structural elements like rails and frames, which now serve as artificial reefs.

The site is known for its relatively clear conditions, though visibility can range from 10 to 25 meters, influenced by seasonal changes and local weather. The protected location within the rade means you typically experience light current, making it easier to maneuver around the large structure. However, strong wind events, particularly the mistral, can alter these conditions, so always be aware of the prevailing weather.

As you explore the Saint-Dominique, the wreck comes alive with marine inhabitants. Look closely at the surfaces and within the nooks of the structure; you'll encounter moray eels (Muraena helena) and conger eels (Conger conger peering from their shelters. Scorpionfish (Scorpaena scrofa) camouflage themselves on the encrusted steel, blending almost seamlessly with the coralligène growth that colonises the wreck.

The open deck and hull provide shelter and hunting grounds for various fish species. You'll often see schools of sea bream (Diplodus sargus sargus) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) patrolling the wreck, while dusky groupers (Epinephelus marginatus) hold territory around larger structural elements. Squid (Loligo vulgaris) are also a common sight, moving through the water column above and around the ship.

Beyond the larger fauna, the Saint-Dominique is a productive site for smaller, more cryptic life. Spirograph worms (Sabella spallanzanii) extend their elaborate crowns from crevices, filtering the water. Pay attention to the wreck's surfaces for various nudibranchs, their vibrant colours standing out against the encrusted steel, adding a macro element to the dive.

What sets the Saint-Dominique apart is its status as a historic Italian three-masted steel sailing ship, lost close to Marseille's coast in a mistral. Its upright position and relatively shallow depth for a wreck of its size create a distinct, atmospheric dive. It offers a tangible connection to maritime history and a stark contrast to the nearby rocky sites, presenting a unique linear ecosystem rich in both history and marine life.
