Manihi - Blue Way

Blue Way is situated on the Manihi atoll in the Tuamotu archipelago, French Polynesia. The centre is positioned to take advantage of the atoll's unique geography, with most diving concentrated around the southern passes. This area is a protected zone, with all fishing prohibited since 2019, ensuring a high density of marine life.

For those looking for a seamless experience, the centre operates the Blue Way Dive Lodge on a private motu. This allows you to stay directly on the water, with transfers from the airport handled by boat. The location provides a quiet base for exploring the vast coral reefs and deep drop-offs that define this part of the Tuamotus.

The centre is run by Yolande, a qualified DEJEPS and SDI/TDI instructor, and Laurent, who manages boat piloting. This small, dedicated team focuses on guided explorations and professional instruction for all levels of experience.

Training is conducted under CMAS, SDI, and FFESSM affiliations. Whether you are looking for a child's introductory dive or advanced technical training, the instruction is tailored to your certification level. The team speaks French, providing a local and authentic experience for those visiting the atoll.

A full range of training is available through CMAS and SDI affiliations. Beginners can start with Niveau 1 training or introductory dives, while more experienced divers can progress through advanced courses.

Specialised training includes Nitrox certification, night diving, and orientation. The centre also offers deeper diving programmes, such as the 'Plongeur encadré à 40 mètres' and courses for divers looking to reach 60 metres. For those seeking autonomy, specific training for independent divers is also available.

The centre provides full equipment hire for divers, using Scubapro kit. This includes everything required for a complete dive setup, so you do not need to transport your own heavy gear if you prefer not to.

Nitrox is available on-site, making it easier to plan extended bottom times on the deeper walls and drift dives. The facility is designed to support both day trips and night dives, with all necessary equipment maintained for local conditions.

The marine life at Manihi is defined by large pelagics and a high density of reef species. You can expect to encounter Manta ray (Mobula alfredi), Hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini), and various sharks including grey sharks, lemon sharks, and nurse sharks. Large schools of Tuna (Thunnus), barracudas, and Jack (Carangidae) are common in the currents.

During the period from late May to early June, you may witness a significant gathering of marbled groupers (Epinephelus) during their reproduction cycle. Other frequent residents include Napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus), eagle rays (Aetobatus), and leopard rays. You will also see turtles, triggerfish (Balistidae), and various species of groupers and jacks patrolling the reef.

The reef structure itself is highly diverse, featuring healthy coral walls and rose coral cliffs. These provide a complex habitat for smaller species such as bonitos, jack mackerels, and various types of wrasse and perch.

Diving in Manihi is characterised by the currents found around the atoll's passes. These currents make the area ideal for drift diving, particularly along the steep drop-offs of the Tairapa Pass.

Visibility is a standout feature of the region, with readings frequently between 50 and 70 metres. The protected status of the area helps maintain the clarity and health of the coral ecosystems.
