The Circus, Manihi: Lagoon coral garden and manta ray site

The Circus is situated within the Manihi lagoon, positioned strategically between the Tairapa/Turipaoa pass and the inner lagoon areas. Unlike the vertical drop-offs found on the outer reef, this site is defined by a gently sloping reef that forms a vast, amphitheatre-like open area. This unique topography creates an arena where currents from the pass meet the calmer waters of the lagoon, allowing various species to congregate. You will navigate through a landscape of coral bommies and sandy patches that extend across the lagoon floor.

The dive profile begins in the shallowest parts of the reef, typically around 7 or 8 metres, where the most intense biological activity occurs. As you move deeper, the reef continues to slope down to a maximum depth of 25 metres. This transition from shallow plateau to deeper slope allows for a diverse range of light conditions and species distributions. It is in these shallower zones that the most notable resident activity takes place, particularly around the specific coral structures that attract larger marine life.

Manta rays are the defining feature of this site, utilizing the coral bommies as cleaning stations.
