Octopus Dive School

Established in 2005, Octopus Dive School is a PADI 5 Star centre situated in the Gibson Bight area of West End, Roatan. The school is positioned along the protected leeward coast, which provides access to calm waters and some of the most reliable diving on the island.

The centre operates with a boutique philosophy, focusing on small groups to ensure that every diver receives individual attention. This approach is designed to help you build confidence and competence, whether you are completing your first certification or pursuing professional levels.

The team brings decades of combined experience to the reefs of Roatan, focusing on a personalised service where your specific diving goals are understood. To maintain this high standard of instruction, the school enforces strict ratios, with a maximum of four students per instructor for courses and six divers per divemaster for recreational trips.

Beyond training, the school is actively involved in local reef conservation, working alongside organisations like the Roatan Marine Park. They promote sustainable diving practices and provide reef-safe sunscreens to help protect the local ecosystem.

Octopus Dive School offers the complete spectrum of PADI training. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or the Bubblemaker programme for children, progressing through to Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver certifications.

For those looking to specialise, the curriculum includes PADI Wreck Diver, Deep Diver Specialty, Navigation Specialty, and Peak Performance Buoyancy. The school also provides professional training through the Divemaster Internship and advanced courses such as Search & Recovery and Emergency First Response (EFR).

The Symbiotic is a 24-foot panga powered by a Yamaha 2-stroke engine, designed to get you to the dive sites quickly. This vessel carries up to 12 people and is used for reef dives, night dives, and exploring the island's diverse topography.

On board, you will find refreshments including water, snacks, watermelon, and coffee. The boat facilitates three daily departures, ensuring you have plenty of opportunities to get in the water.

The centre provides a full range of rental kit, including BCDs from Cressi, Mares, and Scuba Pro, alongside Scuba Pro regulators. For those needing thermal protection, the shop stocks wetsuits ranging from 3mm shorties to 5mm full suits and 3mm farmer johns.

Nitrox is available for divers looking to extend their bottom time. The centre is also a long-standing authorised Scuba Pro reseller, ensuring high-quality equipment is maintained on site.

The reefs are teeming with a vast array of tropical fish, including snapper (Lutjanus), creole wrasse, blue chromis, and various species of grouper (Epinephelus). You will frequently encounter large schools of jacks (Carangidae), barracuda, and colourful butterflyfish (Chaetodon). On the walls and ledges, look for passing eagle rays (Aetobatus) and large groupers.

Macro life is a significant draw here, particularly for those with an eye for detail. You can find garden eels (Gorgasia), various nudibranchs (Chromodoris willani), seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), and scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae). The sandy patches and coral heads also host various crustaceans, including lobster (Homaridae) and mantis shrimp.

In the deeper sections and around the wrecks, the scenery is defined by spectacular soft corals (Alcyonacea), sea fans (Gorgoniidae), and various sponges (Porifera). Large barrel sponges and black corals provide the structural complexity that supports the local marine life, including moray eels (Muraenidae) and various species of shrimp.

The centre is located on the leeward side of Roatan, which generally results in calm waters and low swell. While most sites experience weak currents, some locations like Pablo’s Place/Texas can experience moderate to strong currents where two flows meet.

The dry season, running from February to September, typically offers the best visibility and calmest conditions for diving.
