Sea Hawk Suites

A small, family-run guesthouse with six suites, Sea Hawk Suites puts you in the middle of Isla Mujeres rather than behind the gates of a large resort. The atmosphere is informal and Mexican in character, with Playa Norte close enough to become part of your daily routine and the town's restaurants, shops and ferry terminal within easy reach.

You will be understood in English, Spanish and French by the hotel team. That matters when you are discussing arrival arrangements, asking about the island or trying to explain that the room needs to be dark before an early boat departure. Families are welcome, and the property has been run by the second generation of the same family.

Calle Carlos Lazo places you in the centre of Isla Mujeres, Mexico, around 50 metres from Playa Norte. The beach is white sand with direct access from the suites and takes less than two minutes on foot. El Cocal Beach is around 150 metres away, while Isla Mujeres Beach is about 0.8 miles from the property.

You are also close to the practical part of island life. The ferry station serving Cancún is a five-minute walk away, and restaurants can be reached within five minutes on foot. A grocery shop is around 400 metres away, which is useful when the room's refrigerator needs restocking rather than another restaurant booking.

Cancún International Airport is about 16 miles away; Cozumel International Airport is roughly 50 miles away. Parque Nacional de Arrecifes Garrafon is around 4 miles from the suites.

These are rooms for practical island living rather than elaborate resort theatre. Air conditioning, a private bathroom with shower and toiletries, a refrigerator, coffee maker and toaster cover the useful basics. Every room also has a dining area for two, a furnished terrace and a hammock, giving you somewhere to sit when the sensible plan is to do very little.

The Studio suits a couple who wants one extra-large bed and a little more room to settle in. The Double Room, with two king-size beds, is the more obvious choice when two people prefer separate sleeping space or when a family needs flexibility. King-bed suites add a kitchenette with a microwave and basic cooking utensils, so you can keep breakfast simple or put together something cold between outings.

Daily housekeeping keeps the room in order, except on Sundays. Free Wi-Fi runs throughout the property, and a safe is available for valuables. After salt, sun and a boat ride, the combination of air conditioning, a refrigerator and a private terrace is considerably more useful than a decorative lobby.

Sea Hawk Suites works on a room-only basis. Breakfast and other meals are not part of the stay, so your morning starts with the coffee maker rather than a buffet queue. The dining area for two, toaster and refrigerator let you keep things straightforward when an early start makes a leisurely breakfast look like a luxury sport.

The upside is that you are surrounded by places to eat. Beachin is about 150 feet away, Lonchería San Martín around 400 feet, and Tarzan roughly 350 feet from the property. A wider choice of restaurants sits within a five-minute walk, with La Esquina - Food, Bakery & Bar, Rock Bar and Scorpio Bar all nearby when the evening calls for food, a drink or both.

There is no hotel restaurant or bar to plan your evening around. Instead, you can choose between eating out in the centre or using the room's basic facilities and keeping the night quiet.

Playa Norte is the obvious non-diving option: close enough for a swim, a walk along the sand or a few hours doing precisely nothing in a sensible amount of shade. The furnished terrace and hammock give you a private place to slow down afterwards, without turning relaxation into an organised activity.

The on-site water-sports offering includes snorkelling and fishing, while the tour desk can arrange outings such as whale shark tours from May to September, fishing charters, spearfishing, sailfish snorkelling, sunset cruises and water-taxi services. The property also offers boat excursions and equipment rental, giving you ways to spend time on the water when you are not making a full dive day of it.

For couples and families, the location does much of the work. One person can head to the beach, another can browse the town, and everyone can regroup on the terrace without needing a resort shuttle or a timetable.

Check-in starts at 15:00, and you should provide your expected arrival time in advance. Photo identification and a credit card are required at check-in. Check-out is at 11:00, with luggage storage available when your travel plans leave a gap between leaving the room and leaving the island.

The ferry terminal is a five-minute walk away, making the crossing from Cancún part of the normal route rather than a separate hotel transfer. The tour desk can help with island activities, while 24-hour security, a safety deposit box and daily housekeeping cover the useful practical side of the stay. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.

Sea Hawk Suites is a non-smoking property and pets are not allowed. Children of all ages are welcome. The guesthouse accepts credit and debit cards and PayPal.

The family business has worked around the ocean since 1985 and places ocean protection at the centre of its approach. Ecological sun-protection products are available through the Sea Hawk Divers shop, giving you a more considered option before a day on the water.

The diving operation uses reusable equipment, alongside ecological disinfection measures. It is a modest, practical approach rather than a wall of certificates: use equipment again, clean it properly and take some care over what goes into the sea.
