The architecture draws on Mayan inspiration, while the practical side is straightforward: air-conditioned rooms, balconies, several places to eat and a choice of pools when the sea has had enough of you for one day.

English-speaking guests are catered for through the hotel's English-language website, which is also available in Spanish and Portuguese. The overall feel is that of a full-service resort rather than a small hideaway: meals, drinks, entertainment, children's activities and shopping are all gathered around the property. Useful when you want everything close; less so if your idea of a holiday is counting the palm trees and hearing absolutely nothing after dinner.

Your base is in Cozumel, Mexico, on Carretera a Chankanaab in the southern part of the island. The resort sits directly beside the sea and has direct access to its own beach area, so the Caribbean is not a distant view on a brochure: it is part of the property. Caletita Beach is around half a mile away, while Playa Santa María is about 3.5 miles away by road and Playa Coyoc about 4.5 miles.

Cozumel International Airport is around 3 miles away, with a road journey of roughly five minutes. Chankanaab National Park and Cozumel National Marine Park are only minutes from the resort, and the city centre is nearby for an evening away from the all-inclusive routine. There is also direct access to the Royal Village Shopping Centre, including special discounts in its shops for guests showing their wristband.

The room choice is mainly about how you want to use the space. Couples can look towards the king-bed categories, with the ocean-view version making the balcony the obvious place for the first coffee and the last look at the light. Double-bed rooms suit friends travelling together or a small family, while the Family Suite is the sensible direction when five people need to share without turning every suitcase into a tripping hazard. The Junior Suite gives two guests more room to spread out.

Every room has a balcony, air conditioning, Wi-Fi, a coffee machine, a minibar, a safe and a television, with room service available around the clock. That covers the unglamorous but important part of a diving day: somewhere to put your feet up, cool the room down and get water or food without putting proper clothes back on. Snack Bar Bikini works around seafood appetisers by the main pool; El Marlín Azul deals in hot dogs, pizzas, nachos and burgers; and Café Solé is the place for coffee, tea, desserts and ice cream. Chac Mool is the lobby bar, while Bikini Bar and Cruceros are pool bars, the latter beside the infinity pool with views towards the cruise ships. Sports Bar adds evening DJs and sport for adults.

Some restaurants require a reservation, and the evening dress code is not quite “straight from the boat in flip-flops”: men need long trousers, a sleeved shirt and closed-toe shoes. Lunch is more relaxed, but dry clothes and a sleeved shirt for men still apply. Alcoholic drinks are served only to guests aged over 18.

Four swimming pools give you alternatives when the sea is calling for a rest day, including infinity pools with Caribbean views, poolside bars and outdoor whirlpool tubs near the beach. Sun loungers, a sun terrace and the private beach area make the low-effort option easy: find a chair, order something cold and allow the surface interval to become the afternoon. There is also a children's pool and a solarium.

For the more purposeful sort of recovery, the resort has a fitness centre, steam room and spa with massage treatments. Live music and DJ nights provide the evening entertainment, while karaoke is available for anyone willing to take responsibility for their song choice. The Kids' Club offers games, sports and supervised activities, and a children's playground gives families another way to occupy the hours between meals.

The Royal Village Shopping Centre is directly accessible from the property, and the on-site Royal Mart covers small essentials without requiring an expedition. A tour desk, car hire service, luggage storage and currency exchange add practical options when you decide that staying beside the pool for the entire week may not be the final plan.

Cozumel International Airport is around 3 miles from the resort, about five minutes by car. An airport transfer is available for some reservations; arrange the details with the hotel. Free private parking is available on site without reservation, and Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. The front desk operates 24 hours, with concierge service, an ATM and luggage storage also available.

Check-in starts at 3pm and check-out runs until noon. You need government-issued photo identification and a credit card at arrival, and the minimum check-in age is 18. Early check-in and late check-out can be requested. Children of any age are welcome; cots can be requested for younger children, while no extra beds are available. The property is accessible to guests with disabilities, including upper floors reached by lift.

The all-inclusive plan covers buffet and à la carte dining, but some restaurants require reservations and apply their own age and dress requirements. The resort's environmental programme is called Royal Planet. In the hotel areas, purified-water dispensers are used, and each guest aged over 12 receives a reusable water container in the room. Plastic water bottles are being replaced by this dispenser-and-container system.
