Gorontalo Dive

Located in the deep Tomini Gulf, Gorontalo offers a unique diving landscape where the seafloor drops to depths of over 4,000 metres. This region is defined by its dramatic underwater topography, featuring cliffs, caves, crevices, and underwater sand dunes. It is one of the few places in the world where you can find the surreal Salvador Dali Sponge, a species known for its dream-like textures.

The area is a magnet for large pelagics, including whales, sharks, and dolphins. Whether you are looking for the calm, clear conditions of the reef flats or the more rugged terrain of volcanic islands, the region provides a vast range of environments for both recreational and exploratory diving.

Gorontalo Dive serves as a primary operator in the region, organising scuba diving trips, freediving excursions, and structured training programmes. The team caters to a wide spectrum of divers, from those looking for their first Discovery Dive to experienced enthusiasts joining open trips.

The centre organises trips that extend beyond the immediate Gorontalo area, reaching the reefs of Bolsel and the volcanic landscapes of Una-Una. This allows divers to experience different marine ecosystems, from healthy coral formations to specialised muck diving sites.

The waters of the Tomini Gulf and surrounding areas are home to impressive pelagics. You can regularly encounter whales, dolphins, and various shark species, including blacktip and whitetip sharks. Large schools of jackfish and great barracuda are also common features of the reef environments.

The reef ecosystems are characterised by incredible structural diversity. You will find towering sponges, dense coral formations, and the distinctive Salvador Dali Sponge. The landscape is further enriched by colourful reef fish that weave through the healthy coral colonies.

For those interested in macro and specialised life, the volcanic environment of Una-Una and the sandy areas of Gorontalo offer diverse opportunities. The region is known for its transparent sea life and a variety of smaller organisms that inhabit the crevices and muck sites.

The best time to dive in this region is from November through June. During this period, you can expect calm and clear conditions, making it an ideal window for both beginners and those looking for high visibility.

Outside of this prime season, the seas can become somewhat choppier. While not as intense as other Indonesian diving hubs, it is worth noting this seasonal change when planning your trips.
