Tepanee Beach Resort

Tepanee Beach Resort is made for divers who want the sea close, a proper meal when they come back hungry, and somewhere comfortable to stop thinking about logistics for a while. Set across 10,000 square metres on Malapascua Island, it combines cottages and rooms with a private beach, an Italian-led kitchen, a spa and a cooling pool. The resort sits on a small hill, so expect steps rather than level paths everywhere. Your legs may notice; your view probably will too.

English is spoken by the hotel team, alongside Italian, French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Greek, Hindi, Russian and Filipino. That is useful before breakfast, not merely decorative: arranging transfers, meals or a day on the water is easier when you can explain what you actually need. The atmosphere is informal and sea-facing, with tropical gardens, bamboo and timber around the buildings rather than a large, anonymous hotel block.

You are in Malapascua Island, in the Philippines, at Logon on the southern side of the island. Tepanee is directly beside the sea, descending from the southern edge of Logon Beach towards a small private beach facing south-west. Logon Beach is about 50 yards away, while Bounty Beach is about 150 yards away. The resort’s own beach is the one you can reach without going anywhere else, with white sand, loungers, parasols and the Chiringuito at the water’s edge.

The setting is coastal and green, with jungle, gardens and a protected marine area directly in front of the private beach. That marine zone is being used for coral-reef reconstruction; access is restricted except for a marked snorkelling channel. For a change of restaurant, Angelina Beach Resort & Italian Restaurant and Ristorante Angelina are about 150 yards away, while Amihan Restaurant is about 200 yards away. A little further around the island, Guimbitayan, Bool and Langub beaches are each roughly 1 to 1.2 miles away.

The rooms keep the island theme practical rather than theatrical: colourful walls, wood and bamboo furnishings, a private balcony, and either air conditioning or a ceiling fan to move the air. A minibar and a safe take care of the two small post-dive essentials—cold drinks and somewhere sensible for valuables—while the private bathroom has a shower. Wi-Fi runs throughout the resort, although the island location can make the connection slow or intermittent at times.

For two people, the Standard Double or Twin Room is the straightforward choice, with a king-size bed and a garden setting. The Superior Cottage keeps the same two-person capacity in a cottage layout, while the Deluxe Cottage gives you more room and is the one to favour if you value a little extra space around the bed and balcony. All room categories include a balcony or outdoor space, a wardrobe, a clothes-drying rack and a private entrance. The surrounding gardens and the hilltop position make the view part of the choice, so check the category carefully rather than booking on the room name alone.

The resort has daily housekeeping, ground-floor units and non-smoking rooms. Air conditioning is there for the sticky return from the boat; the ceiling fan and ocean breeze give you another way to cool the room when you are simply sitting outside, deciding whether a second drink is wise. Quiet hours run from 11pm to 8am, which suits early departures rather better than late-night enthusiasm.

There are two restaurants, and they divide the day sensibly. Chiringuito sits on the private beach and covers breakfast and lunch, with snacks and drinks during its daytime opening. You can order Italian coffee and cappuccino, fresh fruit juices, milkshakes, smoothies, cocktails, the fish of the day, pasta, vegetarian dishes, homemade yoghurt and piadina made from an Emilian recipe. It is the place for sand under your feet and no urgent reason to move.

Dinner moves uphill to Amihan Restaurant, where two panoramic terraces look over the ocean, with an air-conditioned indoor area when the evening is too warm. The menu brings together Italian and Mediterranean cooking with Filipino and Asian dishes: pizzas, homemade pasta, grilled fish and meat, Italian cheeses and cured meats, desserts, tropical juices, espresso and cappuccino. Italian products sit alongside local ingredients, so the kitchen has a clear identity without pretending the island is somewhere else.

Chiringuito is the resort’s beach bar as well as its daytime restaurant, serving cocktails, Italian wine, fresh juices, smoothies and coffee. Amihan serves dinner from 5pm to 10pm, while Chiringuito runs from 9am to 6pm. Breakfast is available as a continental, vegetarian, gluten-free, Asian and buffet selection, and special dietary requirements can be handled when arranged in advance. That is useful after a morning in the water, when “something light” and “another plate of pasta” can become the same order.

The private beach is the obvious place to do very little: loungers, parasols, free Wi-Fi and the Chiringuito are all within reach. There is also one outdoor cooling pool, reserved for resort guests and open from 10am to 6pm, with a children’s pool area. It is not trying to replace the sea; it is there for the short, useful dip when you have had enough salt and are not ready for another expedition.

Frangipane Spa is beside the beach and opens from 8am to 7pm by appointment. Treatments include body massage, manicures, pedicures and foot scrubs, with massage techniques drawing on aromatherapy oils, Shiatsu, Thai, Swedish massage and reflexology. A couples massage is available, as are head, neck, back, foot, hand and full-body massages. The spa also has a relaxation area and an open-air bath with eight seats.

If sitting still starts to feel suspicious, the fitness centre is open from 8am to 7pm for resort guests. Walking, wildlife observation and cultural excursions are available on land, while boat trips, fishing and snorkelling give you reasons to leave the lounger. Scooter hire is also available for exploring further around Malapascua.

Getting here is part of the journey. From Cebu Mactan International Airport, the private-car route to Maya takes about four hours, followed by a boat crossing of less than 5 miles to the resort. Tepanee can arrange an airport transfer combining a private car or van with the boat; public transport by bus and ferry is another option. Boat navigation between Maya and Malapascua is restricted at night, with crossings allowed before 5.30pm and after 6.30am. For the return journey, the first departure from Malapascua is at 5am, so check the connection before committing to a flight.

Check-in runs from 3pm to 10pm and check-out from 7am to noon. You need photo identification and a credit card at check-in, and the resort needs your expected arrival time in advance. Luggage storage, concierge service, a tour desk, currency exchange and express check-in and check-out are available. Laundry, ironing and airport-shuttle services are also available. Cash is accepted for payment. Strict quiet hours apply from 11pm to 8am, and visitors must be registered at reception; in the villages, a minimum of shorts and a T-shirt is required.

The resort follows a low-impact approach in both its construction and daily operation. Buildings use local wood, bamboo, stone and cogon roofing, with the structures kept visually discreet from the sea and set among tropical gardens. Solar panels contribute to the energy supply, while desalination and rainwater collection support laundry and gardening.

The practical measures continue with LED lighting, a central solar-water-heating system and septic-tank treatment using specialist bacteria. Directly in front of the private beach, a protected marine area is being used for coral-reef reconstruction. Access is limited to a marked snorkelling corridor, keeping the beach and reef project from becoming one large playground.
