Deep Rock, Malapascua: A Pinnacle Dive

Deep Rock presents as a substantial underwater pinnacle, referred to locally as Bogtong Bato, located a short boat ride from Malapascua. Its profile resembles an inverted cup, with the flat summit plateau situated at 14 to 15 metres below the surface. This creates a distinct depth range for exploration, starting shallow and allowing for a gradual descent around its flanks.

The dive typically begins with a controlled descent along a line, guiding you to the deeper sections at approximately 30 metres. From there, you circumnavigate the massive submerged rock. The topography shifts from the flat top to abrupt walls, offering varied habitats across different depth zones and attracting a diverse range of marine life.

Below the walls, a sandy seabed stretches out at 28 to 30 metres. This transition zone is a different hunting ground altogether, often revealing species that prefer concealment in soft substrates. Keep an eye out for cuttlefish and various pipefish camouflaged against the sand, along with giant starfish making their way across the bottom.

The walls themselves are a canvas of soft corals and sea lilies, vibrant and teeming with macro life. This is where you'll spend significant time searching for the smaller, often overlooked creatures. Deep Rock is known for its resident frogfish, often found perched motionlessly, and offers consistent sightings of ornate ghost pipefish, blending perfectly with their surroundings.

Beyond the macro, the site hosts a rich invertebrate population. Nudibranchs in various forms are a constant presence, along with flatworms and other small crustaceans. Exploring the crevices and overhangs reveals the intricate ecosystems supported by the prolific coral growth, rewarding keen observation throughout the dive.

While primarily a macro site, Deep Rock can offer encounters with larger species when currents pick up. The potential for stronger currents, particularly around the pinnacle's exposed flanks, can attract schools of trevally or barracuda moving through. These are opportunistic sightings that add another dimension to the dive, reminding you of the open water's proximity.
