Timanfaya Sub

Timanfaya Sub has been a fixture of the Lanzarote diving community since 1997. Located in Puerto del Carmen, the centre is uniquely positioned with exclusive access and private parking, making logistics straightforward for divers arriving by car. It holds the distinction of being the only PADI 5 Star IDC centre in the area accredited as a Dive Centre of Distinction by the Biosphere Reserve.

The centre operates with a strong commitment to the local ecosystem, being the first in the Canary Islands to be certified with the Biosphere Sustainable methodology. This ensures that their operations align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, promoting responsible tourism within the protected waters of the archipelago.

As a PADI 5 Star IDC facility, the centre is equipped to handle the full spectrum of diver needs, from those taking their first breaths underwater to professionals pursuing career advancement. The team provides training for Divemasters, Assistant Instructors, and Scuba Instructors, ensuring a high standard of professional development on-site.

The atmosphere is designed to be familial and personalised, with a focus on safety and quality instruction. Beyond the technical training, the centre is a recognised official service provider and distributor for major brands including Suunto, Apeks, Aqualung, Mares, and Cressi.

The training catalogue is extensive, covering every level of the PADI system. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or the Scuba Diver course, progressing through Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver.

For more experienced divers, the centre offers a wide array of specialty courses including Nitrox, Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, Drift Diver, Sidemount, and Dry Suit Diver. They also provide advanced professional training for those aiming for Divemaster, Assistant Instructor, or Instructor roles through the IDC programme. Other specialised training includes Search and Recovery, Multilevel Diver, and Peak Performance Buoyancy.

All dives are conducted from boats, with the centre offering daily double sorties. These trips allow you to head out to the various dive sites around Puerto del Carmen, with a scheduled stop at the port between dives to swap cylinders, grab a coffee, or have a snack.

Nitrox is available for use on these trips, supporting divers looking to extend their bottom time or manage nitrogen loading during multi-dive days.

The centre operates a fully equipped dive shop and technical service department. They are official service technicians for brands such as Apeks, Aqualung, Mares, and Cressi, providing a level of reliability for divers who bring their own kit.

For those requiring rental equipment, a full range is available including wetsuits, fins, masks, snorkels, computers, buoyancy control devices, torches, and cameras. They also provide weight belts and compasses. On-site facilities include access to snacks, coffee, and essential safety equipment such as oxygen.

The waters around Lanzarote are home to a diverse range of pelagic species and reef inhabitants. You can expect to encounter large schools of barracuda, tuna (Thunnus), and salema porgy, alongside groupers (Epinephelus) and various species of seabream. Manta rays (Mobula alfredi) and stingrays are also part of the local ecosystem.

In the sandy areas and rocky outcrops, look for angel sharks (Squatina), electric rays, and butterfly rays. The reef structure is often adorned with sponges (Porifera) and various anemones, providing a habitat for many smaller creatures.

Macro life and smaller species are abundant for those observing closely. You may find seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), various species of octopus (Octopus vulgaris), and garden eels. Crustaceans such as spiny lobsters (Palinuridae) and various shrimps are also frequently sighted among the reef crevices.

The area is accessible for diving year-round, with the local environment offering stable conditions for a wide variety of dive profiles. The centre's location in Puerto del Carmen provides easy access to a high density of dive sites regardless of the season.
