Punta Tiñosa, Lanzarote: Volcanic Formations and Reef Life

Punta Tiñosa lies a short boat ride from either Puerto Calero or Puerto del Carmen, making it easily accessible as one of Lanzarote's newer dive sites. The topography here is a direct result of recent volcanic activity, creating a distinctive landscape underwater. You begin your descent into a varied zone, starting with formations known as 'the garden' in the shallower sections, where the volcanic rock creates a complex and sheltered environment.

The dive site effectively splits into three distinct depth levels, each offering a different experience. The first level, ranging from 6 to 12 metres, is characterized by volcanic formations that structure the reef and provide numerous hiding spots. As you continue deeper, the second level extends to approximately 18 metres, transitioning into sandy terraces that punctuate the rock, often revealing resident bottom dwellers moving across the substrate.

Beyond the terraces, the third level drops away into a long, dramatic wall reaching down to 35 metres. This wall is a vibrant habitat adorned with an anemone and sponge growth, creating a textured surface that draws in various reef fish. Along this deeper section, you will encounter fissures and overhangs, some concealing moray eels, while others house a variety of shrimp species within their recesses.

Exploration along the wall can lead you to small caves and tunnels, which add an element of cavern diving to the experience without requiring complex overhead environments. One notable feature is a grotto between 20 and 26 metres, often teeming with shrimps that inhabit its dark interior. These sheltered spots are also where you might spot Canary lobsters, occasionally making an appearance.

The diverse volcanic structure of Punta Tiñosa provides a varied habitat that supports a wide range of marine life. Numerous species of rays, including stingrays (Dasyatis pastinaca), are regularly observed cruising over the sandy patches or resting along the base of the wall. Additionally, angel sharks (Squatina squatina) blend seamlessly with the bottom, often requiring a keen eye to spot.

Beyond the larger cartilaginous fish, the reef teems with smaller, more cryptic species. Seahorses (Hippocampus hippocampus) are sometimes seen clinging to the growth, while cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) and octopuses (Octopus vulgaris) use the volcanic nooks and crannies for shelter and hunting. It is this combination of unique geology and the resulting resident marine life that defines the diving experience at Punta Tiñosa.
