Pointe du Grand Gaou, Cavalaire-sur-Mer: Reef and Caves

Pointe du Grand Gaou is a distinctive rocky point that descends into the Mediterranean, characterised by its unique underwater topography. You'll find a sloping reef typical of the Cavalaire coastline, made up of broken rock, large blocks, and numerous crevices. These geological features create a varied environment, offering shelter and hunting grounds for a diverse array of marine life, making each section of the reef a new discovery as you follow its contours.

As you descend, the terrain transitions into a series of impressive rock formations, including several underwater caves and overhangs. These features are a highlight of the Grand Gaou, providing intriguing swim-throughs and protected spaces. The play of light filtering into these limited-overhead environments creates a dramatic visual experience, drawing your attention to the textures and shapes of the rock itself.

The rocky landscape provides a home for a variety of resident species. Keep an eye out for groupers (Epinephelus marginatus) often observed patrolling the deeper sections or hiding amongst the larger boulders. Moray eels (Muraena helena) can be spotted peeking from crevices, alongside the more common sea bream and wrasse (Labridae) species that navigate the reef openly. Scorpionfish (Scorpaenidae) blend into the rock, while conger eels (Conger conger) might be found tucked into the larger cracks.

Beyond the immediate reef, you may encounter barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda) in schools, particularly in the bluer water away from the main rock formations. Dusky groupers (Epinephelus marginatus) are another notable presence, often solitary and territorial, making their appearance a special moment on the dive. The overall biodiversity is rich, offering plenty of macro life if you take the time to look closely within the broken rock and crevices.
