Hotel Le Kallisté is a small, recently renovated hotel-restaurant in the seaside quarter of L'Ayguade, with 16 air-conditioned rooms and the Mediterranean way of organising a day: beach first, a proper meal later, and no need to dress the whole thing up with grand claims. The place also works for a practical diving break: you have Wi-Fi throughout, air conditioning when the Var has done its worst, and food on site rather than a hunt for dinner in a dry robe.

The hotel stands at 144 Boulevard du Front de Mer in Hyères, in the L'Ayguade district on the seafront. L'Ayguade beach is about 200 metres away, with fine sand and direct access from the hotel area. Hyères Marina is 3 km away and the Giens Peninsula is 2 km from the hotel. Hyères railway station is about 3 miles away, while Toulon–Hyères Airport is roughly 1 mile away. For a wider outing, the Îles d'Or — Porquerolles, Port-Cros and Île du Levant — are accessible from the Hyères area, putting boat trips and the coast's more interesting corners within reach.

The room choice is mainly about how much space you want around the bed, and whether the view matters. A standard double is the sensible couple's option; the double with sea view and terrace is the one to choose when the room should do more than store your bags. Some rooms open towards the Mediterranean, and the terrace gives you somewhere to sit without having to go straight back to the beach or the restaurant.

For three or four guests, the larger rooms use a king-size bed with sofa beds. The family room is the practical answer when everyone needs to sleep under one roof, while the accessible double room is on the ground floor with level access and adapted bathroom equipment. Vegetarian choices include burrata with heritage tomatoes and a vegetable wok, and desserts are made in-house. A wine list, a bar, a coffee house and a snack bar complete the food and drink options, with snacks available during the afternoon.

Breakfast is continental and available as a buffet or to take away. You can have it on the terrace or in your room, which gives you a little flexibility when the morning is organised around an early departure rather than a leisurely second coffee.

The coast does most of the work here. L'Ayguade beach is close for swimming, a walk along the seafront or a straightforward afternoon on the sand, while snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing and boat excursions are available around the area. You can keep the plan deliberately modest: water, shade, a shower and dinner is still a perfectly respectable itinerary.

If you and your companion prefer to stay dry, bicycles are available to hire, and walking and cycling tours offer an easy way to explore beyond the immediate shoreline. The surrounding programme reaches towards Vieil Hyères, the Provençal market, the Massif des Maures and the Îles d'Or. Hiking, local-culture tours and excursions give a non-diving partner something more interesting to do than wait for the dive boat to return.

Families have family rooms, children's meals and board games and puzzles. The garden, terrace and sun terrace provide outdoor space for a slower hour, while happy hour and live performances add options when the evening has not quite finished but another full meal would be excessive.

Free public parking is available nearby, with no reservation required, which is useful if you are arriving with more luggage than dignity. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, daily housekeeping is included, and luggage storage is available.
