Les Dalles de Bagaud, Port-Cros: Exploring the Underwater Slabs

Les Dalles de Bagaud presents a unique underwater landscape, distinctly shaped by large, flat rock formations and sharp rocky ridges that cut through extensive Posidonia seagrass beds. This geological structure creates a clear and easily navigable underwater architecture, with visible features extending down to 20 meters. As you descend, the interaction between the light and these natural slabs defines the visibility and how marine life interacts with the environment.

The dive profile guides you through a series of these rock slabs, offering a structured descent where you can observe the transition from shallow, light-filled areas to deeper sections. One of the site's defining features is "L'Œil de Bagaud," a natural circular hole pierced through a rock in the northern sector. This specific formation acts as a distinct visual marker, adding a memorable element to the dive as you approach and swim through or around it.

While exploring the dalles and ridges, you will encounter a variety of resident fish species that inhabit these structured environments. Look for girelles and cénilabres, including the ornate crénilabre paon and the more subdued crénilabre cendré, as they move between the rocks and the seagrass. Serrans écriture are also commonly seen, along with sars navigating the crevices and corbs seeking shelter in the shadows of the rock formations.

The Posidonia meadows are not merely a backdrop but an integral part of the ecosystem, providing shelter and foraging grounds for many species. Saupes graze on the seagrass, while more elusive creatures like poulpes may be spotted camouflaged among the rocks or within the vegetation.
