La Pointe de Montremian, Port-Cros: Gorgonian-covered rocky spur

Diving La Pointe de Montremian starts by descending along a substantial rocky spur that extends due north, eventually meeting a sandy bottom at 31 meters. This main spur is notable for its vibrant covering of red, yellow, and white gorgonians, creating a rich tapestry of life as you follow its contours downwards. The transition from rock to sand marks the deepest point of the typical dive here, offering a clear profile for managing your bottom time.

About 50 meters from the tip of the main spur, you encounter an independent rock formation. This rock rises 4 to 5 meters from the seabed and measures approximately 20 meters in circumference, entirely covered with the same rich gorgonian growth seen on the main spur. This separate structure provides another distinct area to explore, often revealing different resident species that find shelter within its crevices and among the coral branches.

Connecting the main spur and the western rock formations, which lie between 10 and 26 meters, is a 45-degree sandy slope known locally as « la piste de ski de Bagaud ». This unique geological feature is not just a transition zone; it offers a different habitat for bottom dwellers and a distinct visual experience. The slope provides a clear path between the two main rocky areas, allowing for a structured exploration of the site.

While exploring, keep an eye out for moray eels (Muraena helena) hidden in cracks and crevices, and octopuses (Octopus vulgaris) camouflaged on the rocks. Scorpionfish (Scorpaena scrofa) and gurnards (Chelidonichthys lucerna) are common sights, particularly near the transitions between rock and sand. The vibrant gorgonian fields are also home to various nudibranchs, including the celestial doris (Felimare picta) and flabellinas (Flabellina affinis), adding splashes of colour to the scenery.
