Le Mustang P-51, Giens: WWII Fighter Wreck Dive

Diving Le Mustang P-51 brings you to a piece of history resting at 56 metres on the sandy seabed. The fighter aircraft, largely intact, sits flat, allowing a complete circuit in a single dive. The descent takes you through clear water, gradually revealing the silhouette of the wreck, a compact and recognisable shape against the sand.

The most striking feature of the Mustang is its cockpit, which remains in excellent condition. As you approach, you'll see the front section still retains its propeller and the distinctive Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. Despite decades underwater, the wings, though corroded, still house their Browning machine guns, offering a tangible link to its past.

A significant detail of this wreck is its tail section. For many years, it was separated from the main fuselage, but in 2011, divers successfully brought it back and reattached it, restoring the aircraft to its full, original profile. This careful preservation work enhances the completeness of the dive experience, making the P-51 feel more whole than many other wrecks.

This P-51 was flown by Lieutenant Robert Daniels of the 332nd Fighter Group, the Tuskegee Airmen, the first African-American fighter unit in the US Army. He was shot down on August 12, 1944, by German anti-aircraft fire during a mission targeting radars near Toulon, just four days before the Provence Landings. The identity of the pilot was only confirmed in 2005, 61 years after the crash, through the aircraft's serial number, adding a powerful human dimension to the site.

Access to the Mustang P-51 is typically by boat, launching from La Londe-les-Maures. The wreck is situated between Les Fourmigues and the Giens peninsula, requiring a transit that places it away from direct shore access. The location contributes to the undisturbed state of the wreck and the clear water conditions often encountered at this depth.
