Kia Ora is a 109-villa beachfront resort for couples, with the lagoon doing most of the visual heavy lifting. You can choose between a villa opening towards the garden, the beach or the water, then let the evening unfold between the restaurants, the pool and the bar rather than looking for entertainment elsewhere.

The tone is polished but still tied to its setting: Polynesian touches, contemporary common areas and views across the lagoon towards Tahiti. The shared spaces have been renovated, including the reception, spa, pool, bars and restaurant. English is used on the resort's website, which is useful when arranging the practical side of a stay.

This is a place built around staying put. You have direct access to Temae Beach, a spa, an infinity pool, water sports and two restaurants, so the useful question is less “what is nearby?” than “do you really intend to leave?”

The address is in Maharepa, French Polynesia, on the eastern side of Moorea. The resort sits directly on Temae Beach, with white sand in front and a lagoon and marine reserve forming the immediate setting. The reserve has protected the area for more than twenty years, with coral and marine life developing in the sheltered waters.

Temae Beach is described as the longest beach on the island, and this is a genuinely beachfront location rather than a hotel that asks you to cross a road and hope for the best. The nearest restaurant outside the resort, Restaurant K, is about 50 metres away, while Coco Beach is roughly 500 metres away. Other bars and restaurants are further around the island, so a car or organised transport becomes more useful if you want to dine beyond the property.

Moorea Airport is about 0.6 miles away as the crow flies, with the road distance closer to 1 mile. From Tahiti, you can reach Moorea by a scenic flight of around 15 minutes or by ferry in about an hour. Tahiti International Airport is roughly 10 miles away in straight-line distance, but the crossing matters more than the number on the map.

The villa choice is the main decision here. Beach-access villas put you closest to the sand, garden-view villas trade the shoreline for a more inward-facing setting, and the overwater villas are for anyone who regards a lagoon beneath the terrace as a perfectly reasonable bedroom feature. Every listed category is designed for two guests, with an extra-large double bed and a sofa bed.

The Luxury Overwater Villa gives you more room to spread out than the smaller overwater categories, while the Superior Villa with Ocean View makes sense if you want the outlook without staying above the lagoon. You can also choose a garden and beach view, which is a useful middle ground between greenery and immediate access to the sand. The villas are individually furnished, so photographs are best treated as a guide rather than a promise that every room will look like the one beside it.

Air conditioning matters in French Polynesia, particularly when your day has involved salt water, sun and a body that has stopped negotiating. Daily housekeeping is available, and room service lets you keep dinner simple when you would rather remain horizontal. The beds have been rated highly for comfort, and the resort welcomes children of any age, although cots and extra beds are not available. That makes the villas a straightforward fit for two, but less flexible for a larger family arrangement.

Two restaurants keep the food side of the stay on site. Pure works in a contemporary setting with panoramic views over the lagoon and Tahiti, serving international cuisine. K is the more intimate option, with gourmet cooking and the same broad lagoon outlook; it is the restaurant to consider when dinner is meant to last longer than the discussion about tomorrow's dive.

Breakfast is a buffet from 06:00, which is a useful start for a diver rather than a decorative detail. You can also have breakfast delivered by canoe, particularly suited to the overwater villas. The kitchen draws on Polynesian cooking and fresh, fragrant ingredients, with special-diet menus available on request.

There are two bars. VUE faces the lagoon and swimming pool, serves South Pacific cocktails and has a large selection of liqueurs, along with snacks and ice cream. The Beach Bar sits on the white-sand beach and covers the essentials after a long day: cocktails, snacks and a view across the protected lagoon. Weekly entertainment takes place at VUE, including Polynesian cultural evenings.

The infinity pool faces the lagoon and the green mountains of Moorea, giving you a second place to cool down when the beach has done its job. Sun loungers, beach chairs, umbrellas, a terrace, gardens and a private beach area make it easy to construct an afternoon with no timetable whatsoever. It is a legitimate activity, especially when the alternative is putting dry clothes back on.

Le Jardin spa offers massages and facial treatments, with French products used in its treatments. The facilities include a relaxation area and spa packages, as well as beauty treatments such as body treatments, body scrubs, wraps, manicures and pedicures. A fitness centre is available for anyone who still has energy to spend, while yoga classes, a couples massage and full-body massage cover the gentler end of the recovery plan.

On the water, you can go snorkelling, kayaking, paddleboarding or water skiing. On land, there is cycling, table tennis, badminton equipment and access to hiking and local culture tours, including mountain exploration on foot or horseback. Cooking classes, walking tours and themed dinner nights are also available, while live music, cultural evenings, stand-up comedy and other weekly entertainment give the bar a little more purpose after sunset.

Check-in starts at 14:00 and check-out runs until 11:00. Early check-in and late check-out can be requested, which may help if your travel times do not line up neatly with those hours. The front desk operates around the clock, with luggage storage, concierge service, a tour desk and currency exchange available on site.

You can contact the resort about transfers from Tahiti, with Moorea reachable by ferry or short flight. A shuttle service is available, and car hire can be arranged if you want to explore beyond Temae. Free private parking is available on site, with no reservation needed. The resort also has free WiFi throughout the property.

Children of any age are welcome, and children aged 12 and over are charged as adults. Children aged 3 to 11 receive breakfast free of charge and a discount on other meals, while children up to 2 eat free. Cash is accepted, and payment is made in the local currency, Pacific Francs.
