Set among tropical gardens beside a black-sand beach, Tahiti Pearl Beach Resort gives you a proper base for a Tahiti stay rather than simply a bed between excursions. The resort has 120 rooms, an infinity pool, a day spa and a health club, with Matavai Bay doing much of the visual work from the private patio decks.

The atmosphere suits couples who want sea views, a little space and somewhere to spend the evening without having to go into town every night. Choose a hot-tub version if the idea of soaking with a view sounds more appealing than joining the evening programme. It is a perfectly respectable post-dive plan.

For families or two couples travelling together, the suites and two-bedroom suites make more practical sense than trying to fit everyone into one room. Several have kitchens, and the larger two-bedroom options include two bathrooms; the two-bedroom Signature Suites accommodate up to six. The Royal two-bedroom suite adds a private pool and kitchen, which is the sort of arrangement that makes staying in feel less like a compromise.

There are useful touches for a day spent in and around the sea: air conditioning for drying out and cooling down, soundproof rooms, a minibar, tea and coffee-making facilities, a wardrobe and extra-long beds. Satellite television and free Wi-Fi cover the quieter hours. Room service runs around the clock, so an early breakfast or a late snack does not have to be negotiated with your body clock.

Hiti Mahana Restaurant handles breakfast, lunch and dinner in an open-air setting overlooking Lafayette Beach and Matavai Bay. Its menu moves between Tahitian cooking, South-East Asian dishes and Mediterranean cuisine, which gives you more range than the usual resort routine of repeating the same grilled item until departure.

Breakfast is a buffet served from 6:30 am to 9:30 am, with American-style options. Lunch runs from 11:30 am to 2 pm, and dinner from 6 pm to 9:30 pm. Those timings are useful for a diving schedule, although the early start is the detail to note if you want to eat before a morning departure.

There is one named bar: Bay Bar, positioned at the resort's highest point. It serves cocktails and looks across the lagoon towards Mount Otemanu; evenings can be taken under the stars rather than under a ceiling. A snack bar, minibar and 24-hour room service give you smaller options when a full restaurant meal is too much effort, while special-diet menus can be arranged on request.

The outdoor plan is uncomplicated: one infinity pool, a beachfront setting, loungers, parasols and enough garden space to find a slower corner. Tahiti International Airport is about 6 miles from the resort, and an airport shuttle is available for a charge. A free shuttle bus connects the resort with Papeete six days a week. Car hire is available on site, while free public parking makes a rental car a workable option for seeing more of the island than the hotel and capital.

Check-in starts from 2 pm and check-out is by 11 am. The resort asks you to give your expected arrival time in advance, which is particularly useful if your flight lands late or your transfer is arranged around a boat schedule. The front desk operates around the clock, with concierge, tour-desk, currency-exchange and luggage-storage services available.
