Shaab Abu Nuhas, Soma Bay: Reef Diving and Coral Gardens

Shaab Abu Nuhas, known for its proximity to famous wrecks, carves out its own identity as a premier reef dive in the Soma Bay region. The dive typically begins in a stunning coral garden, nestled between 10 and 12 metres beneath the surface. Here, the light penetrates beautifully, illuminating a tapestry of hard and soft corals that provide refuge and hunting grounds for smaller reef inhabitants, setting the stage for the dramatic topography to follow.

As you move beyond the initial coral garden, the reef transforms into a distinct drop-off, a steep wall that plunges towards greater depths. This transition in topography creates a dynamic environment, where the vibrant, sunlit shallows give way to the deeper, more mysterious sections of the reef. It's along this wall that the energetic pulse of pelagic life truly becomes apparent, drawing divers further into the blue.

The open water along the drop-off is a prime location for observing significant fish activity. Schools of fusiliers (Caesionidae), often numbering in the hundreds, move in synchronized patterns, their iridescent scales flashing as they navigate the currents. These dense aggregations provide a constant spectacle, attracting larger predators to patrol the periphery of the reef.

Following the fusiliers, it's common to encounter significant schools of trevally (Carangidae), also known as jacks. Their sleek, powerful forms are unmistakable as they sweep through the water, often in pursuit of the smaller schooling fish. Witnessing their hunting behaviour is a highlight, a testament to the healthy food chain supported by the rich coral ecosystems of Shaab Abu Nuhas.

Beyond the immediate schooling fish, the nutrient-rich waters surrounding Shaab Abu Nuhas attract other impressive pelagic species. Thons (Thunnus spp.), easily identifiable by their streamlined powerful bodies, are frequently sighted, slicing through the water with effortless grace. These apex predators add an element of thrill to the dive, reminding you of the Red Sea's vast and wild marine life.

The depth range at Shaab Abu Nuhas, from a manageable 10 metres in the coral gardens to a maximum of 30 metres along the wall, accommodates a variety of dive plans. This allows for extended bottom time in the shallower, colourful sections, while still offering the opportunity to explore the deeper reef and observe the larger pelagic species that cruise the thermoclines.
