Mexico puts Cozumel and the Sea of Cortez within reach. Its two terminals do not connect airside, however, and the train between them stops at 23 hours.

How long is your layover?

⚠️ Two hours is the recommended minimum and that assumes you are not changing terminals.
- ⚠️ The two terminals are NOT connected airside. Changing terminals means leaving the secure area, taking the train, then clearing security again.
- The inter-terminal train is free but reserved for passengers with a boarding pass, ticket or booking code. It runs from 5 h to 23 h and takes less than 5 minutes.
- ⚠️ Outside those hours, or with bulky baggage, you need the inter-terminal bus and its free use is not guaranteed.
- The recommended benchmark for an international connection is two hours. Allow more if you are changing terminals with a dive bag.
2–5 hrs
Wi-Fi and charging points are free the rest is chargeable.
- Wi-Fi is free in both terminals, as are the charging areas by the departure gates.
- ⚠️ There is no proper rest area and no quiet room. Travellers report being woken if they lie across the seats, so do not plan to sleep there.
- ⚠️ There are no public showers. You will find them in lounges or in a paid cabin area.
- A paid left-luggage service operates continuously. It is one of the few reliable ones at a Latin American hub.
5–10 hrs
Getting out is straightforward on formalities less so in traffic.
- VISA REQUIRED Mexico waives visas for holders of the main European passports, for tourism and transit, and for far longer than a stopover.
- ⚠️ Since 2023, travellers whose nationality requires a Mexican visa must hold one EVEN IN TRANSIT. This does not affect European passports, but it may affect your travelling companion.
- Going into the city takes time: six to eight hours is the realistic threshold, with more time being more comfortable. Mexico is a very large city with dense traffic.
- The airport runs no city tour.

⭐ One hotel is in Terminal 1, and another is linked by a covered walkway.
- This is Mexico’s strength on an overnight stop: one hotel is inside Terminal 1, another is in Terminal 2, and two more connect to Terminal 1 by covered walkway. You can walk there with your kit.
- ⚠️ Choose a hotel at YOUR terminal: the train does not run after 23 hours, and a night transfer means a bus and another security check.
- NO VISA A paid cabin area is landside, without clearing immigration. It is somewhere to endure, not sleep. With four walkable hotels, the decision is not difficult.
- No airline-funded overnight programme is documented.
What catches travellers out
The two terminals do not connect airside
Changing terminals means leaving the secure area and clearing security again. The train is quick less than 5 minutes but the rest of the process is not.
The inter-terminal train does not run at night
It operates from 5 h to 23 h only, and only for passengers holding a travel document. Outside those hours, you need the bus, with less clear conditions.
You may be woken if you lie down
There is no designated rest area, and traveller accounts agree on this point. On an overnight stopover, your choice is between a lounge and a proper room not between two rows of seats.
Immigration is not what holds you up
It is the opposite of what you might expect. Since automated gates were installed, immigration takes ten to fifteen minutes when the queue is moving. The real bottleneck is BAGGAGE DELIVERY: waits of one to two hours at the belt occur on busy days. Base your connection on that, not on the time at the desk.
Why not wait it out in peace?
Mexico has more pay-at-the-door lounges than any other Americas hub in this list.
This is the airport’s pleasant surprise: half a dozen lounges are available at the door, without a card or status, across both terminals. You have a real choice.
The terminals offer no proper rest area or quiet room, and travellers report being woken if they lie across the seats. A lounge is not a luxury here.
There are no public showers. Lounge showers and those in a paid cabin area are the only options.

- The walkway keeps you out of the street and out of a taxi, which is welcome at night with dive kit.
- Choose it when your stopover deserves a proper night rather than a few hours.

The diver’s reflex
Your Cozumel or La Paz flight may leave from the other terminal
Cozumel, Cancún, La Paz, Loreto and Huatulco are domestic flights, and they may not leave from the terminal where you land. As the two buildings do not connect airside, the transfer means exiting, taking the train and clearing security again with your dive bag. Check your onward flight terminal BEFORE you book it is the one detail here that genuinely changes things.
The train stops at 23 hours
It is the same trap as Panama, within an hour. After 23 hours, the inter-terminal train no longer runs and you need a bus, whose free use is not guaranteed. Many long-haul flights from Europe land in the evening: check your arrival time as carefully as your connection length.
Your torches travel dismantled, with terminals taped
The domestic airline taking you to Cozumel or La Paz is one of the few to state this so precisely: dive torches must be DISCONNECTED and their terminals covered with adhesive tape. This is not sensible advice; it is a condition of carriage best dealt with at home, with a roll of tape, rather than in front of an agent with no time to spare. For the rest of your bag, the same page sets 25 kg and 250 cm combined; above 280 cm or 45 kg, nothing travels, whatever you are prepared to pay.
The left-luggage service runs continuously use it
It is unusual enough at these hubs to merit mention: Mexico has a paid left-luggage service open continuously. On an eight-hour stopover, it saves you carrying a hand-baggage load of regulator, computer and housing while you look for somewhere to sit.
