Mar Adentro Diving

Mar Adentro Diving has been operating in Mahahual since 2011, providing a base for divers to explore the southern reaches of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Situated on the Malecón at the km 0,3 mark of the coastal road towards Xcalak, the centre is integrated into the Ecocabañas Blue Kay complex.

The centre serves as a gateway to some of the most significant marine environments in Mexico, including the Xcalak National Reef Park and the remote Banco Chinchorro atoll. Whether you are looking for local reef dives or long-range excursions, the location provides a direct link to the diverse ecosystems of the Caribbean coast.

The team consists of highly qualified instructors and divemasters who provide instruction in both English and Spanish. They maintain a strict ratio of a maximum of five divers per guide, ensuring a controlled and professional environment for all outings.

As an SSI Training Dive Centre and PADI affiliated resort, the centre manages a full range of training programmes. For those looking to pursue a professional career, they offer Divemaster training, with the possibility of exchanging work for the course, though candidates must provide their own mask, fins, and dive computer.

Training at Mar Adentro Diving covers the entire spectrum of certification levels through PADI and SSI. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving and progress through to Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver.

More experienced divers can specialise with courses such as Deep Diver, Nitrox, and Wreck diver. The centre also facilitates professional development through the Divemaster programme, as well as Emergency First Response training and Rescue Diver certification.

The centre provides full equipment hire for those not travelling with their own kit. This includes all necessary components for a dive, though divers should note that torches and dive computers are not included in the standard rental packages.

For longer excursions to Xcalak or Banco Chinchorro, box lunches are provided to ensure you are well-fed during the day's operations.

The reefs are defined by a massive variety of hard corals, sea anemones (Actiniaria), and sponges. You will find a high density of mollusks, crustaceans, and over 200 species of fish patrolling the coral structures.

Large pelagics and iconic species are a regular highlight, including various sharks, rays, and sea turtles. You can often spot the Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) and the Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) amongst the reef. During the breeding season from April to July, sea turtles are particularly prevalent.

In the deeper waters or during specific excursions, you may encounter false killer whales and dolphins (Delphinidae). The area is also home to the American crocodile and the Morelet's crocodile.

Macro life and nocturnal visitors include the octopus, spiny lobster (Palinuridae), and various species of crabs and shrimp. Night dives reveal a different side of the reef, where you might encounter moray eels (Muraenidae) and various reef dwellers emerging from the shadows.

The local Mahahual reef typically experiences moderate currents, particularly on the second reef barrier which often flows towards the north. However, the local sites are generally known for having low current conditions, making them suitable for a wide range of abilities.

While the area is diveable year-round, certain seasonal factors should be noted. Strong winds can affect sea states and navigation, and the 'nortes' in December or the 'surestes' between late March and mid-May may influence conditions.
