Takata Experience

Located in Mahahual, Takata Experience operates at the intersection of recreational diving and active marine science. Since its establishment in 2016, the centre has focused on a conservation-led approach, working closely with the MARES Research Center to support coral restoration and reef monitoring projects in the region.

This is not a high-volume commercial operation, but a hub for divers, biologists, and students. Whether you are looking to complete your first certification or are pursuing a professional career as a Divemaster or Instructor, the emphasis remains on small groups and meaningful engagement with the local ecosystem.

As a PADI 5 Star IDC centre, the team is equipped to handle the full spectrum of diver progression. The staff includes experienced instructors and guides who are also dedicated marine conservationists, ensuring that every dive contributes to a deeper understanding of the reef.

Instruction is available in English, Spanish, and French, making it a versatile choice for international divers. The centre's expertise extends into professional development, offering the full Instructor Development Course (IDC) for those looking to join the professional ranks.

The course catalogue is extensive, covering all levels of the PADI system. Beginners can start with PADI Discover Scuba Diving or the Open Water Course, while those looking to advance can pursue the Advanced Open Water, Deep Diver, or Drift Diver specialties.

For professional divers, the centre offers the full pathway from Divemaster to the Instructor Development Course (IDC). They also provide specialised training such as the Sidemount Diver, Search & Recovery, and various conservation-focused courses including Coral Reef Conservation and Project AWARE.

The centre provides a full range of rental kit for those not travelling with their own equipment. This includes regulators, BCDs, wetsuits, fins, and masks.

For night dives or photography, torches are available for hire. Nitrox is available on-site, and the centre maintains emergency oxygen equipment to ensure standard safety protocols are met.

The local reefs are vibrant, featuring healthy hard corals, sponges, and colourful reef fish. You will regularly encounter sea turtles, including Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata) and Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), alongside Nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum) and various species of rays.

Pelagic life is often present, with sightings of Eagle ray (Aetobatus), large tarpon (Megalops), and barracuda. In the deeper sections, you may also spot schools of jack (Carangidae).

For those interested in macro life, the shallower sites like Faro Viejo offer excellent opportunities. Look for seahorses, nudibranchs, and various small crustaceans and mollusks tucked into the reef structure.

The area is characterised by calm swells and low to negligible currents, making it an ideal location for reef exploration. Visibility is generally excellent, typically ranging between 20 and 30 metres.
