Diversity Diving

Located at 75 Ave. & 36 st. in Playa del Carmen, Diversity Diving is a local, family-run operation born from a deep respect for the ocean and the unique freshwater systems of the Yucatán. Rather than operating as a mass-market provider, they focus on a personalised approach that treats every diver as a guest rather than just another number in a manifest.

Their approach is defined by flexibility and a commitment to quality time underwater. Because they operate their own vessel, they are not bound by rigid, pre-determined schedules, allowing them to adapt to conditions or spend longer on a particular site if your air supply and bottom time permit.

The team consists of four experienced instructors who have spent years diving the local waters of the Riviera Maya. This longevity means they possess an intimate understanding of the specific nuances of the local reefs and the complex cave and cenote systems.

Instruction is kept intimate with a strict maximum ratio of four divers per guide. This ensures that whether you are a beginner or an advanced diver, you receive the attention required for safety and enjoyment. The centre communicates in both English and Spanish, making it accessible for a wide range of international divers.

Diversity Diving provides a comprehensive range of training through the PADI curriculum. Beginners can start with Discover Scuba Diving or progress through the Open Water Diver and Advanced Open Water Diver courses.

For those looking to refine their skills or move towards professional levels, they also offer the Rescue Diver course. The instructors focus on building confidence and technical competence, ensuring you are prepared for the specific challenges of the Caribbean and the cenote environments.

The centre operates its own dedicated boat, which provides the freedom to explore the region's diverse sites without the constraints of a large tour operator's timetable. The vessel has a capacity for 8 divers.

On board, you will find snacks and non-alcoholic beverages to keep you refreshed between dives. This autonomy allows the team to prioritise the best sites for your specific level and interests, whether that involves a drift dive on the reef or a trip to the cenotes.

For those travelling light, the centre offers full equipment hire. You can source a complete kit on-site, ranging from regulators and BCDs to fins and masks.

Their dive packages are designed to be all-inclusive regarding the logistics of the region, covering equipment and the necessary entrance fees for the cenotes and marine parks.

The Caribbean reefs around Playa del Carmen and Cozumel are teeming with life. You will regularly encounter colourful reef fish such as Angelfish (Pomacanthidae), Parrotfish (Calotomus), and various species of Grouper (Epinephelus). Schools of Snapper (Lutjanus) and diverse species of tropical fish are common sights, alongside Moray eels (Muraenidae) hiding in the ledges.

In the deeper waters and during specific seasons, larger pelagics may appear. From November to mid-February, there is an opportunity to encounter Bull sharks in the region. You may also spot various species of rays and other sharks during your dives.

For those interested in macro life, the cenotes and reefs offer plenty of detail. Keep an eye out for Octopus (Octopus vulgaris), various crustaceans, and interesting invertebrates. The unique chemistry of the cenotes often creates a distinct environment for observing specialised marine life.

Diving in the region is influenced by the varying environments of the open sea and the inland freshwater systems. Ocean dives, such as those on the reef or in Cozumel, can experience currents that range from moderate to very strong.

The cenote dives are generally calmer in terms of current, but they present different challenges, such as thermoclines and the need for precise buoyancy when navigating through narrow swim-throughs or near delicate formations. The water temperature remains warm, typically between 27 and 31°C.
