Diving Reality

Located in Solidaridad, Diving Reality provides a gateway to the most diverse underwater environments in the Mexican Caribbean. The centre focuses on connecting divers with the natural wonders of the Riviera Maya, ranging from the open ocean reefs to the intricate cave and cavern systems found inland.

With over 20 years of experience, the operation is built on a foundation of professional service and local expertise. Whether you are looking to complete your initial certification or seeking advanced technical training in the cenotes, the centre organises expeditions that highlight the unique geology and ecology of the region.

The centre is led by founder Gastón Flageat, who brings two decades of experience in customer service and operations to the diving programme. The team is structured to provide high-quality instruction and guided exploration, ensuring that every diver is supported according to their skill level.

Leading the cenote diving programme is Tamara Álvarez, a PhD in anthropology and a qualified diving instructor. Her expertise allows the centre to offer a deeper connection to the environment, often integrating workshops on the science, nature, and culture of the region into the diving experience.

Safety and small group dynamics are central to the operation, with a maximum of three divers per guide. This ratio is particularly beneficial when navigating the more technical passages of the local cave systems or when working on precise buoyancy skills in the cenotes.

Diving Reality is an SDI affiliated centre, offering a complete progression of certifications. Beginners can start with the Open Water Scuba Diver course, with subsequent paths leading through Advanced Adventure Diver and Rescue Diver levels.

For those looking to professionalise their skills, the centre provides training for Divemaster and Instructor roles. Specialist courses are also available to refine specific skills, including Nitrox, Deep Diver, Navigation Diver, and Wreck diving.

For those travelling without their own kit, a full range of equipment is available for hire. This includes regulators, wetsuits, fins, and masks, allowing you to focus on the dive itself without the burden of heavy luggage.

For night dives or technical explorations, torches are available to ensure you can navigate the darker sections of the caverns and see the limestone formations in detail. When heading to the cenotes, the centre provides van transfers from the diving centre to the dive sites.

The cenote ecosystems host a variety of unique species, including freshwater fish, blind fish, and various types of shrimp. In the more open water areas and near the coast, you may encounter sea turtles and colourful tropical fish.

In the seasonal windows, the region offers opportunities to see bull sharks from November to March. You may also encounter manatees during certain periods of the year.

Macro life and smaller inhabitants are common throughout the limestone structures, including various species of fish and small crustaceans that thrive in the sheltered environments of the caves and caverns.

The cenote systems are characterised by calm, freshwater environments with almost no current and no swell, providing stable conditions for buoyancy practice and cave navigation. Water temperatures remain consistent, typically between 24°C and 25°C.

When planning your visit, please note that the use of sunscreen and insect repellent is strictly prohibited within the cenotes to protect the fragile ecosystem. Additionally, because many cenotes are on private property, entry fees are required to support their conservation and maintenance.
