Pura Vida Diving Playa del Carmen

Pura Vida Diving has been operating in the Riviera Maya since 2012, bringing experience that began in Koh Tao, Thailand. The centre is strategically positioned to serve divers looking to explore the diverse underwater landscapes of Mexico, from the Caribbean reef systems to the unique freshwater cenotes of the peninsula.

The centre's expertise is built around three distinct environments: the local reefs of Playa del Carmen, the world-renowned drift diving of Cozumel, and the spectacular cave and cavern systems of the Yucatan. This variety allows for a comprehensive diving experience, whether you are interested in tropical reef fish or the technical challenges of overhead environments.

The team consists of professional instructors and guides who are qualified to lead divers through a wide range of environments, including open water, reefs, and cenotes. The centre operates with a strict ratio of a maximum of four divers per guide, ensuring that every group receives personalised attention and high safety standards.

Instruction is provided in both English and Spanish, making the centre accessible to a broad range of international divers. The staff's expertise extends from entry-level training to professional-level certifications, including the Instructor Development Course (IDC).

As an SSI affiliated centre, Pura Vida Diving provides a complete range of training from beginner to professional levels. This includes Open Water Diver, Advanced Open Water Diver, and Rescue Diver, as well as the Divemaster and Instructor Development Course (IDC).

Specialised training is a core part of the curriculum, with courses available in Nitrox, Deep Diving, Sidemount, Decompression, and Cavern Diver. For those looking to advance their professional career, the centre offers Assistant Instructor and Assistant Instructor Trainer programmes, alongside various Specialty Instructor certifications.

For trips to Cozumel, the centre provides transfers to the ferry or via fast boat. For cenote excursions, transport is included between Playa del Carmen and Tulum to reach the dive sites.

The centre offers full equipment hire for divers who prefer not to carry their own kit. For those training or diving locally, Nitrox is available on-site. Safety is a priority, with oxygen kits maintained for all excursions.

The reefs are teeming with colourful life, including various species of angelfish (Pomacanthidae), parrotfish (Calotomus), and surgeonfish (Acanthuridae). You will regularly encounter large schools of colourful reef fish, alongside groupers (Epinephelus), snapper (Lutjanus), and various species of jacks (Carangidae). Large predators such as great barracuda (Sphyraena barracuda), nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum), and silky sharks are also part of the ecosystem.

In the Cozumel and local reef areas, look for sea turtles (Cheloniidae), including loggerhead turtles, green turtles, and hawksbill turtles. Stingrays, including southern stingrays (Hypanus americanus), and eagle rays (Aetobatus) are common sightings on the sandy patches near the reef.

For macro enthusiasts, the environment hosts a variety of smaller creatures such as seahorses (Hippocampus kuda), various species of shrimp (Caridea), and octopus (Octopus vulgaris). You can also find nudibranchs, crabs (Brachyura), and various species of anemone (Actiniaria) tucked into the reef structure.

The reef architecture itself is built from hard coral (Scleractinia), brain corals, and various gorgonians, providing a complex habitat for sponges (Porifera), sea fans (Gorgoniidae), and many other invertebrates.

Cenote diving typically takes place in stable freshwater environments with temperatures maintained between 24°C and 26°C throughout the year. Most cave and cavern dives consist of two immersions with an interval of approximately one to one and a half hours.

Reef diving in the area is subject to typical Caribbean conditions, with bull shark encounters being most frequent between November and March.
