The Fives Oceanfront is built in a residential style rather than around a single standard hotel room, so the feel changes depending on whether you book a compact suite for two or one of the larger residences for family or friends.

The tone is polished but not entirely buttoned-up. There is a beach club, a rooftop restaurant, live reggae bands, DJs and a pool bar serving mezcal cocktails, while the village itself is close enough for a walk. Puerto Morelos village is about a ten-minute walk away, putting restaurants and drinks within reach when you fancy a change from the hotel. Casa Caribe is roughly 400 metres away, while Osteria Barocca and Único Beach are around 100 to 150 metres from the property. Cancún International Airport is about 15 miles away, with the hotel describing the drive as around 20 minutes.

The Junior Suite is the straightforward choice for a couple who want more than a bed and a narrow strip of floor between it and the door. Every room has air conditioning, a balcony, a private bathroom and a view, with a dressing room and wardrobe space helping keep travel clothes, beachwear and the day’s slightly damp decisions under control. A dining area, sofa, coffee machine and microwave add a useful domestic edge.

For three people, or for anyone who dislikes living out of a bag, the one-bedroom resort residences give you a separate living arrangement and more breathing space. The two-bedroom oceanview residence is the practical step up for a larger group, while the oceanfront presidential residences are aimed squarely at families or friends travelling together and wanting the sea to do some of the decorating.

It gives you a properly cooled room after heat, salt and a long day outside, while the balcony and outdoor furniture provide somewhere to sit before dinner without immediately committing to another cocktail. Bathrooms include towels, slippers, bathrobes, toiletries, a hairdryer and a shower. Room service runs around the clock, and daily housekeeping means you can leave the room in the morning without having to stage-manage it first.

The dining set-up is an à la carte all-inclusive formula rather than a single buffet doing all the heavy lifting. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are available across the restaurants, with breakfast covering Continental, Full English/Irish, vegetarian, gluten-free and American choices. Room service is available 24 hours, and there is also a snack bar and an on-site coffee house for the moments when a full meal feels like an overreaction.

There are two named bars. Manglar Lobby Bar is the place for a snack, a drink and a plan for the next day; RoMarley Pool Bar handles classic cocktails, gin and tonics and mezcal creations beside the ocean, with Afro-Caribbean music in the mix. The all-inclusive programme also includes a Sunday Fish Market with oysters, chocolate clams, giant prawns, mussels, Yucatan octopus and local catches, alongside Mexican cooking workshops and tequila and mezcal tastings.

Two infinity pools give you a choice between staying close to the beach and heading up to the rooftop. The rooftop pool comes with sea views; sun loungers, beach chairs, pool and beach towels, a sun terrace and gardens cover the less ambitious business of finding a place to sit down and stay there.

The Spa by The Fives is the more serious recovery option, with massages, facial treatments, hydrotherapy, a sauna, steam room and relaxation area. Couples can book a couples massage, while head, neck, back, foot, hand and full-body treatments cover most of the body parts that complain after a week of travel and diving. There is also a fitness centre, yoga and fitness classes.

The wellness programme goes beyond stretching on a mat. Depending on the activity, you can join Ojo de Dios ceremonies, macramé workshops, mindful breathwork or guided walks. Cooking classes, mixology workshops, cultural excursions, bike tours and visits to pyramids add structure for days when the sea is not on the schedule. Evenings bring live reggae music at RoMarley Beach House, DJ performances and music sessions. Table tennis, aerobics and canoeing are also available.

Cancún International Airport is the natural arrival point, around 15 miles from the hotel. An airport shuttle is available on request, and the property also offers a shuttle service. A concierge, tour desk, car hire, luggage storage and a 24-hour reception keep the practical side reasonably central, while private check-in and check-out are available. Valet parking and nearby private parking cover guests arriving by car.

Check-in runs from 3 pm to midnight, and check-out from 11.30 am to noon. The minimum check-in age is 18.
