Koox Adventure Center has been a fixture of the Mexican diving scene since 2011. Located in Tulum, the centre is ideally positioned to access the unique underwater landscapes of the Yucatan Peninsula, from the crystal-clear freshwater systems of the inland cenotes to the vibrant coral reefs of the Caribbean Sea.

The centre has built a reputation for expertise in cave exploration and mapping, catering to divers who want to move beyond recreational reef diving. Whether you are looking to navigate through intricate swim-throughs or explore the deep vertical shafts of the peninsula, the focus here is on precision and personalised guidance.

The team is composed of highly experienced instructors with more than 16 years of professional experience. They provide instruction in English, Spanish, and French, ensuring clear communication for a diverse range of international divers.

Koox is recognised for its eco-responsible approach, operating with a strict no-plastic policy to protect the delicate freshwater and marine ecosystems they explore. This commitment to the environment is central to their operations, particularly when guiding through the sensitive cenote systems.

The training programme covers the full spectrum of diving, from the initial PADI or SSI Open Water Diver certification to advanced levels. For those looking to progress, they offer Advanced Open Water Diver courses and specialised training.

Technical divers can find specific pathways here, including Technical Diving and Cave Diving certifications. Additionally, the centre offers SSI Freediving courses, covering levels 1, 2, and 3 for those interested in breath-hold diving.

The centre provides full equipment hire for those who do not wish to carry their own kit. This includes 5mm wetsuits, boots, and torches for night dives, alongside cylinders and regulators.

Nitrox is available for divers looking to extend their bottom time on reef or cenote dives. The centre also handles all logistics, including transfers from the Tulum boutique to the various dive sites.

The reefs and walls are home to a variety of large pelagics and schooling fish. You can regularly encounter sea turtles, eagle rays, and various species of ray (Batoidea). Schools of snapper, barracuda, and colourful tropical fish are common, alongside sightings of nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum) and reef sharks (Carcharhinus).

In the deeper or more current-driven areas, keep an eye out for larger predators and rays. Mackerel sharks are frequently seen from November to March, while whale sharks arrive between June and September.

Macro life and crustaceans are abundant throughout the cenotes and reefs. You can find spiny lobster (Homaridae), various crabs (Brachyura), and squid. In the freshwater systems, cave-adapted crustaceans are a key feature of the environment.

Other notable residents include moray eels (Muraenidae), such as the green moray (Gymnothorax funebris), and various species of angelfish (Pomacanthidae), surgeonfish (Acanthuridae), and parrotfish (Calotomus).

Diving in the region is subject to varying conditions depending on the location. The Caribbean coast can experience strong currents, particularly during drift dives along the reefs.

The best time to visit for optimal light and visibility within the cenotes is between May and November. During this period, the light penetration is ideal for photographing the underwater formations.
