Tanjung Kilang, Moluccas: Drift Diving with Pelagics

Diving Tanjung Kilang means committing to a drift. From the moment you enter the water, the current takes hold, pulling you along a sloping reef that acts as a natural highway for marine life. This isn't a site where you hover; it's about moving with the ocean, maintaining your buoyancy, and staying aware of your surroundings as the underwater landscape unfolds rapidly. As you surrender to the flow, you'll find yourself moving swiftly through a pass that funnels the larger residents of the Moluccas. The currents, while demanding, often bring with them excellent visibility, allowing you to spot distant shapes long before they are close. Your focus here should be outward, into the blue, as this is where the most significant encounters happen. It's a dive for observation and interaction with the larger ecosystem, rather than scrutinizing small details on the reef.

The strong currents that define Tanjung Kilang are precisely what attract its most celebrated inhabitants: the pelagic species. You'll see tuna (Thunnus) darting through the blue with impressive speed, their streamlined forms a clear indication of their open-ocean existence. Keep an eye out for the majestic Napoleon wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus), often cruising along the reef's edge, seemingly unperturbed by the powerful flow that drives the more transient species through the pass.

Grey reef sharks (Carcharhinus amblyrhynchos) are regular patrols here, their presence a constant reminder of the healthy ecosystem thriving in these waters. However, it is the possibility of encountering manta rays (Manta birostris) that truly elevates this drift. These gentle giants soar gracefully against the current, their massive wings propelling them through the water with an effortless elegance that belies their size. For those fortunate enough, the distinctive silhouette of a hammerhead shark (Sphyrna lewini) might emerge from the deeper blue, an unforgettable sight in these strong currents.

The topography of Tanjung Kilang features a sloping reef that descends to 35 metres, with corals in good condition despite the exposed conditions. While primarily an open reef, there is a small cavern mentioned, offering a brief change of scenery. The site's open structure and exposure to current are key factors in attracting the large schools of jacks, snappers, and fusiliers that congregate here, creating dense walls of fish that move in unison with the water's flow.
