The Penida Project

The Penida Project is a social jungle hostel in Nusa Penida, founded in 2023 by four friends. You come here for a more communal stay than a conventional hotel offers: there is a pool, a bar, a restaurant and plenty going on around the garden, with other travellers never far from the scene.

The setting is deliberately informal. You can settle into the jungle surroundings, join a group activity or simply find a chair and let the island day drain away. Most organised activities finish around 10pm, although selected Saturdays and full-moon events continue later. That gives you a useful distinction: social, yes; an all-night party address, no.

You are in Nusa Penida, Indonesia, at Jl. Panaonan in Pendem, Ped. The property sits inland in a jungle setting rather than directly on the shoreline, with the beach a five- to ten-minute walk away. Sun Sun Beach is about 1.8 miles away by road, while Prapat Beach is around 2.8 miles away.

The surrounding island is made for days out rather than aimless wandering from one shop to the next. Bukit Singkiran is about 2 miles away by road, and Seganing Waterfall around 9 miles. Giri Putri Cave is roughly 8 miles away, with Angel's Billabong about 12 miles away. Penida Espresso and several local restaurants are around 2 miles from the hostel, giving you alternatives when the on-site kitchen has already had its turn.

This is capsule-dorm accommodation, so you choose it for privacy within a shared room rather than for four quiet walls and a minibar. Each capsule has a privacy curtain, its own power hub, ambient lighting, a secure locker and a premium mattress. That matters when you need to charge everything, shut the curtain and disappear for a few hours before the next early start.

Air conditioning keeps the dormitories manageable in the island heat, while shared bathrooms provide showers. High-speed WiFi is available throughout the property, so your post-dive admin can be dealt with from the dorm or garden rather than from a reception desk. Daily housekeeping is included, and luggage storage is available when your travel plans do not line up neatly with check-in or check-out.

The adults-only policy makes the accommodation particularly suited to travelling divers, solo guests and couples who do not mind the hostel format. You need to be at least 18 to check in, and there are no cots or extra beds. In plain English: this is a place for choosing your own capsule, meeting people when you feel like it and keeping your sleeping arrangements simple.

Penida Pizza Co. handles the serious business of feeding you. The kitchen works across local and international dishes, with wood-fired pizzas, smoothie bowls and fresh gourmet salads. It serves from 7:30am until 10:30pm, which gives you a useful spread from morning coffee territory through to a proper late dinner.

The on-site Bar & Restaurant adds cocktails, local and international dishes and a daily happy hour from 4pm to 7pm. Delivery runs from 1pm to 10pm, handy when your legs have had enough of island roads and your appetite has not. The kitchen is more than a pizza stop, but the wood-fired oven is the detail worth remembering when you are hungry enough to stop pretending a snack will do.

You also have a restaurant and bar on the property, rather than needing to organise every meal elsewhere. A breakfast service is set from 7:30am, while the accommodation does not state a board plan, so you should expect to arrange meals as you go.

The outdoor pool is surrounded by lush jungle and has sun loungers, beach chairs and umbrellas around it. It is the obvious place to cool down without making another expedition of the afternoon. The garden and sun terrace give you quieter options, while a pool table, darts and a basketball court cover the evenings when sitting still has become surprisingly difficult.

There is free guided morning yoga and complimentary boxing, both useful ways to loosen up without booking a full day away. Snorkelling, free-diving, boat excursions, island tours and cultural activities are also available through the property. Scooter rental and taxi services make it easier to reach places such as Kelingking Beach, Diamond Beach, Angel's Billabong, Broken Beach, Atuh Beach, Thousand Islands and Pura Ped Temple.

The social calendar is substantial: group activities, family dinners, sunset sessions, live DJ sets, karaoke, movie nights, pool tournaments, basketball games, trivia, Tuesday Tipsy Bingo and jungle parties all feature. Canang workshops add a cultural activity to the mix. You can join in, or retreat to the pool with a drink and let the younger energy burn itself out.

Check-in runs from 3pm to 10pm, while check-out is from 6:30am to 11am. Cash is the accepted payment method, and a refundable cash damage deposit is taken on arrival and returned at check-out after the property has been inspected. Children are not allowed, pets are not allowed, and the minimum check-in age is 18.

Free private parking is available on site without reservation. WiFi covers the whole property, and laundry is available when salt, dust and tropical humidity have started winning the argument. A shuttle service can be arranged, and the hostel offers free harbour pick-up when you book your fast boat through the property. It also organises taxi services, which is useful on an island where arrival logistics deserve more attention than a quick glance at a map.

Ngurah Rai International Airport is about 48 miles away by road. The route involves the harbour and the onward crossing to Nusa Penida, so the harbour shuttle is the practical detail to arrange before arrival. Cancellation and prepayment conditions vary by accommodation option.

The conservation work here is community-led rather than limited to a statement on a wall. Projects include planting coral fragments underwater, reforesting mangroves, supporting nursery restocking, learning about seaweed farming with local farmers, visiting schools and joining habitat clean-ups.

Project Laut is an official REEF.org conservation partner and field station. The project has planted more than 1,500 coral structures, completed more than 100 structured fish surveys and tracked more than 1,800 turtle sightings. You can take part through the eco-tourism activities, making the conservation side something practical to do during your stay rather than a slogan to nod at on the way to the pool.
