SD Point: North Nusa Penida Drift Dive

SD Point, located on the north coast of Nusa Penida, is characterized by a continuous sloping coral reef. This topography creates a natural guide for a drift dive, where the current propels you along the reef structure. The site begins with rich shallow coral gardens and gradually extends down to 30 meters.

As you descend, you will generally experience a unidirectional current doing most of the work. This 'lazy dive' profile allows you to focus on the expansive hard and soft coral gardens, which are particularly healthy and vivid. Large coral formations and bommies provide shelter for a variety of reef inhabitants.

The prevailing currents, ranging from moderate to strong, contribute to the site's rich biodiversity by constantly delivering nutrients. While drifting, you will observe numerous species of reef fish, often schooling or foraging along the corals. Look out for moray eels hidden in crevices and lionfish camouflaged against the background.

SD Point is also known for larger marine life. Turtles are frequently sighted, gracefully moving with the current. Reef sharks patrol the deeper sections of the reef. Keep an eye out into the blue for potential encounters with larger pelagics.

During certain seasons, specifically from June to October, there is a chance of spotting Mola Mola, particularly in the deeper areas. While not guaranteed, the possibility adds an exciting element to the dive. Other occasional pelagic visitors include trevally and king mackerel.

Visibility at SD Point is typically good, allowing for clear views of the extensive reef and its dynamic marine life. The currents are a defining feature of this site; while often providing an effortless drift, they can intensify, requiring divers to manage their buoyancy and position actively.
