Sental, Nusa Penida: North Coast Drift

Sental is situated on the north coast of Nusa Penida, characterized primarily by a long, sloping coral reef that transitions into steeper wall sections. This site is defined by extensive hard and soft coral gardens, creating a diverse underwater landscape. The reef system starts shallower and extends to deeper areas, offering varying profiles.

Dives at Sental are typically drift dives, with the current sweeping you along the reef's contour. This provides a journey over vast coral fields where you can observe a high density of reef fish in their natural habitat. Currents at Sental are known to be variable, sometimes shifting rapidly, which makes it an engaging site for divers comfortable with dynamic water movement.

Along Sental's reef, you will find excellent coral formations and marine life. This area offers a rich display of sponges and corals, attracting a diverse range of creatures. Keep an eye out for camouflaged inhabitants and numerous fish species. The health of these extensive coral structures supports a robust food chain, drawing a continuous turnover of marine life.

Beyond the thriving reef ecosystem, Sental is a known location for larger marine life. Green turtles are frequently sighted navigating the reef. Blacktip reef sharks and whitetip reef sharks are commonly seen patrolling the reef edges, especially where the slope drops into deeper water. You might also encounter large schooling fish, tuna, and barracudas, attracted by the nutrient-rich currents.

Sental also holds the potential for encounters with iconic pelagic species. Mola mola (oceanic sunfish) are observed during specific seasons, particularly from July to October, drawn to the cooler, deeper waters. Manta rays and eagle rays are also occasionally reported, and for the more experienced, thresher sharks have been seen in deeper areas. Napoleon wrasse can be spotted, adding to the site's rich biodiversity.
