Semaya, Nusa Penida: Drift Diving on an Exposed Reef

Semaya sits on the exposed southern tip of the Suana area on Nusa Penida's east coast. Here, the island's geography channels currents, meaning this site can experience significant water movement. This exposure contributes to its rich biomass and vibrant reefs, giving it a less-frequented, wilder feel compared to more accessible locations.

The dive profile at Semaya generally follows a sloping reef terrain, starting as shallow as 5 metres and extending down to around 25 metres. This gradient creates a diverse environment, from sunlit shallow areas to deeper, more structured formations where life concentrates. You'll move along these slopes, allowing the current to guide you over the coral gardens.

Expect to encounter healthy soft coral covering large sections of the reef. These soft corals provide habitat and hunting grounds for a variety of reef fish and smaller invertebrates. The structural complexity of the reef, with its undulations and crevices, offers hiding spots and points of interest as you drift.

A notable highlight at Semaya is the regular presence of white-tip reef sharks, particularly in the areas where currents are more pronounced. These pelagic encounters add a dynamic element to the dive, requiring you to maintain awareness of your surroundings as you move through the site.

Semaya is not a site for the uninitiated. The occasional strong currents make it a drift dive, demanding that you are comfortable managing your buoyancy and position in moving water. This dynamic environment is precisely what maintains the site's rich ecosystem, cleaning the reef and bringing in nutrients.
