Tabari Dive Lodge

Tabari Dive Lodge is a small eco-lodge on an island in Raja Ampat, built around traditional bungalows facing the ocean and a family-style way of staying. Waisai is the port used for arrival. The lodge collects guests there by speedboat, turning the final leg into a transfer across the water rather than a drive through traffic. Domine Eduard Osok Airport is 49 miles away, with the onward journey involving the port and boat transfer.

The nearest listed cafés and warungs are about 22 miles away. In practical terms, you will be eating at the lodge, not comparing three nearby restaurants on foot. The restaurant and full-board arrangement are therefore part of choosing the location, not a minor detail.

The rooms are arranged for the sort of evening when you come back sun-warmed, salty and ready to stop carrying things. Sea views, a private entrance and a seating area give you somewhere to land, while parquet flooring keeps the rooms closer to bungalow living than standard hotel carpeting.

For two, the Double Room with Sea View is the straightforward choice: one large king-size bed and the view doing much of the work. If three people are sharing, the Large Double Room makes more sense because it combines a king-size bed with a single bed. Each room has a private bathroom with a walk-in shower, towels, a hairdryer and a mosquito net. There is also an alarm clock and a socket beside the bed. The rooms are non-smoking, and the private entrance means you can get back in without turning your return from the beach into a full ceremony.

Full board keeps the day simple: breakfast, lunch and dinner are handled at the lodge, so your post-dive appetite does not require a boat trip or a search for an open kitchen. For dry-land time, you can walk through the jungle, look for birds or join outings to waterfalls. Organised trips include Pianemo and the Bitang Lagoon viewpoint, the Kalibiru River, Batanta Island and its waterfalls, and Le Passage between Waigeo and Gam. These are proper outings rather than filler activities, so they give non-divers something substantial to do while the divers are away.

A cooking class, local culture tours, badminton equipment, board games and evening entertainment cover the gaps between meals and excursions. The lodge also welcomes companions who do not dive, which makes the location easier to choose when only part of your party plans to spend the holiday underwater.

Arrival is an early-day affair: check-in runs from 07:00 to 12:00, and you need to tell the lodge when you expect to arrive. Check-out is by 11:00. The airport shuttle is available on request, while the lodge’s own arrival arrangement brings guests by speedboat from Waisai, Raja Ampat’s port town.

This is a cash-only property, so plan that part before leaving the mainland. WiFi is available in the public areas rather than described as a room service, and daily housekeeping, a 24-hour front desk, concierge help and a tour desk cover the useful basics. Laundry is available, and packed lunches help when you are heading out for a full-day excursion.
