Yenatar Resort

Yenatar Resort is a small private-island address on Gam Island, built for people who would rather wake to ocean and jungle than traffic and a breakfast buffet under fluorescent lights. Eight two-storey villas spread across two hectares, with the beach and tropical forest close at hand.

You will be understood in English, and Indonesian is also spoken by the hotel team. The atmosphere is shaped by the setting: a white-sand beach, ocean views, sunrise over Raja Ampat and a marine reserve beyond the shore. It is a good fit if your idea of a proper evening involves a quiet drink, fresh seafood and somewhere to watch the light change, rather than a parade of hotel entertainment.

Families can use connecting villas, and children of any age are welcome. Birthday celebrations and local community events can also be arranged, bringing Papuan decorations, music and food into the stay.

The resort is in Friwin, Indonesia, on Gam Island, across from Kri and Manswar Islands and in the middle of Raja Ampat's Dampier Strait. It sits directly beside the sea, with private access to a long white-sand beach, sunbeds and parasols. The east coast is grassy and includes a floating area associated with dugongs and seahorse habitat.

This is an island stay rather than a base for wandering between shops and restaurants. The nearest listed cafés and restaurants are about 13 miles away, around Waisai, so the resort's own dining arrangement matters more here than it would in town. Friwen's mangrove forest is nearby, while the wider surroundings bring jungle, lagoons, coral reefs and birdlife into the picture.

Domine Eduard Osok Airport is 51 miles away. The location rewards staying put: the sea is at the door, and the restaurant, beach and excursions are all part of the same small island rhythm.

The accommodation is built around spacious two-bedroom villas for up to four people, with handcrafted wooden furnishings and private balconies on both floors. That makes the layout useful for a family or two friends travelling together, while a couple can simply take the extra space and stop pretending that one small room is enough for dry bags, camera cases and holiday clothes.

For a sea-facing stay, choose the room arrangement with the balcony and ocean view. Direct beach access and a private sun deck with sunbeds make it easy to step outside for the first light or sit down without having to find a public terrace. The sea view is the main reason to choose this type of accommodation, not a decorative line on a room card.

Air conditioning, hot water, a private bathroom, a wardrobe, slippers, a kettle and a dining area cover the useful basics. The rooms are non-smoking, and the balcony gives you somewhere to sit while the air conditioning does its work after a hot, salty day. A desk is available too, although the island is likely to make a strong case for ignoring it.

One restaurant does the heavy lifting here: the round Yenatar Resort Restaurant sits on the main jetty, with ocean and rainforest views and a natural-design setting that makes breakfast a better proposition than it has any right to be. Full board covers breakfast, lunch and dinner, so you can plan your day around the water rather than searching for somewhere to eat on an island.

Breakfast is a buffet from 7am, with an earlier start on transfer days. Expect Indonesian options such as nasi goreng and mie goreng alongside eggs, fresh tropical fruit, yoghurt, cereals, juices, coffee, tea, homemade pastries and cakes. A second breakfast can be served during the interval between dives or snorkelling, while afternoon coffee, tea and homemade snacks keep the gap before dinner under control. Breakfast to go is also available.

Lunch and dinner combine Indonesian, Asian, Western and international dishes, with fresh fish from local fishermen, seafood, meat, salads, soups and a weekly barbecue. The kitchen works with garden fruit and daily homemade baking, and can accommodate halal, kosher, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free requirements. One coffee bar serves Indonesian coffee, espresso, cappuccino and latte macchiato throughout the day; beer and soft drinks are also available. For a more deliberate evening, the jetty can be dressed for a candlelit dinner with flowers, wine and tropical fruit.

The private beach is the obvious starting point when you want to do very little. Sunbeds, parasols and direct access from the villas make the routine pleasingly simple: walk outside, find a patch of shade and let the island get on with itself. There is no pool to draw you away from the actual sea, which is rather the point in Raja Ampat.

When sitting still loses its appeal, the resort offers snorkelling and paddleboarding, alongside excursions through the islands. Wayag and Piaynemo combine water time with photography, trekking, limestone karsts and hidden lagoons, while the Blue River, Sand Dunes on Koh Island and Friwen's mangrove forest provide different ways to spend a day.

The land-based options are particularly useful for a non-diving companion. Birdwatching trips focus on the Red Bird of Paradise and Wilson's Bird of Paradise, and local community visits add a cultural element without turning the whole stay into a scheduled programme. Fresh seafood, traditional charcoal barbecue and Papuan coffee tasting keep the evening closer to the island than to a generic resort.

Arrival needs organising because this is a private-island resort rather than a roadside hotel. Domine Eduard Osok Airport is 51 miles away, and the resort also refers to transfer days to Sorong and bespoke destination arrangements. Contact the resort before travelling to settle the route and timing; there is no useful walk-in alternative once you are on the island.

Check-in runs from 14:30 to 15:00, with check-out from 10:30 to 11:00. The front desk and security operate around the clock, while concierge help, a reception safe, laundry and daily housekeeping cover the practical jobs that tend to multiply in a humid climate. Universal plugs are available, and Wi-Fi is available in the restaurant areas.

Children of any age are welcome, with no age restriction for check-in, and pets can be accommodated on request. Parties and similar events are not allowed, although the resort separately hosts birthday celebrations and local community gatherings. Special dietary needs should be arranged before arrival, and longer special packages require a minimum stay of four nights.

The resort is located beside a marine reserve area and places nature and underwater conservation at the centre of its setting. Its position on a formerly uninhabited reserve means that coral reefs, turquoise lagoons, tropical forest and the surrounding wildlife are not scenery added after the fact; they are the reason the resort is here.

Fresh water is available near Friwen's mangrove forest, and the wider site includes habitats used by dugongs, seahorses and exotic birds. The practical point for you is simple: the beach, forest and marine environment are part of the stay, so everyday choices on the island carry more weight than they would in a conventional coastal hotel.
