Mahi Mahi Dive Resort sits directly on the coast, with its own black-sand beach, an integrated dive centre, a three-metre pool, and views towards Apo Island. The hotel team speaks English, so the practical conversations are straightforward from arrival onwards.

The resort opened in 2018 and has 11 rooms, giving it a relatively small-scale feel. You can spend the useful part of the day in the water, then come back to a garden, a terrace, a pool, or a meal by the beach without having to organise an evening expedition. Couples, families, and divers travelling at different levels can all make use of the layout, although the three-metre pool is clearly more interesting to divers than to anyone merely looking for a quick splash.

You are in Maluay, Zamboanguita, in Negros Oriental, Philippines, on the island's sunrise-facing coast. The resort has direct access to its private beach, where the sand is black volcanic sand rather than the postcard-white variety. Zamboanguita Beach is effectively on the doorstep, while Dauin Beach is about 5 miles away.

The cuisine brings together fusion, international, local, and seafood dishes, with meat and vegetarian choices as well.

Breakfast is included and starts at 7:00 am, which is the sort of timing divers can actually use. The choice covers continental, American, Asian, vegetarian, and gluten-free options, with fresh fruit, juices, coffee, tea, and a breakfast menu available throughout the day. If your body wants breakfast at an unreasonable hour after a late return, the all-day menu is the useful bit.

The drinks side sits within the restaurant rather than a separately named bar: cocktails, signature cocktails, milkshakes, coffee, tea, wine, and champagne are available. There is also a snack bar and an on-site coffee house, while special-diet menus can be arranged on request. The restaurant is listed among the Top 100 Best Club Restaurants in the Philippines, but the practical attraction is simpler: you can eat well without leaving the resort.

A three-metre outdoor swimming pool gives you a place to move, cool off, or work on in-water skills when the sea is not on the schedule. Around it, sun loungers and beach chairs provide the traditional post-dive option: horizontal, quiet, and requiring no equipment beyond a towel. The private black-sand beach is directly accessible, with loungers and parasols.

The spa offers a broad massage menu, including Swedish, signature, therapeutic, shiatsu, aromatherapy, hand and foot reflexology, cupping, and aloe vera treatments. Couples' massages are also available, which gives non-diving partners something better to do than watch you inspect the same camera housing for the ninth time. Garden seating and outdoor areas add further space to sit without having to occupy a restaurant table.

When you want a day away from the resort, the tour desk can arrange outings around Dumaguete, heritage sites, lakes, waterfalls, hot springs, sandbars, island-hopping, and wider Negros Oriental or Cebu tours.
