Set on the coast of Zamboanguita, Wellbeach Dive Resort is made for days that begin outdoors and finish at the table. The atmosphere is easy-going rather than formal, with a garden, a terrace, a private beach and a swimming pool surrounded by flowers, palms and greenery.

English and French are spoken by the hotel team, so you can deal with the practicalities of a dive holiday without reaching for hand signals. The resort also has a restaurant, bar, massage service and free Wi-Fi throughout the property. It is the sort of place where the useful things are close at hand, which matters when your legs have already done enough work for one day.

The resort is in Zamboanguita, in Negros Oriental, Philippines, at KM 22 Mojon, Maluay. It sits directly on the seafront, with a private beach equipped with sun loungers and parasols. You can move from land to the water without making the beach a separate outing.

The property is outside the town centre rather than in the middle of it. That gives your stay a coastal base, while excursions can take you towards islands, waterfalls, markets and other local sights. The airport is 15.5 miles away, and an airport transfer is available through the resort.

The room range runs from simple single accommodation and shared-bathroom dormitory beds to double, twin and family rooms, with several options offering garden, sea or water views. For a couple, a double room with a private bathroom keeps things straightforward; if the view matters, the sea-view and balcony categories make that part of the choice rather than leaving it to chance.

The family rooms are the practical end of the range. The largest listed family category accommodates up to five people, which is useful when one room needs to contain both relatives and the assorted belongings that follow them around.

That gives you a choice between trying something local and ordering the food equivalent of a dependable surface interval.

Breakfast is a buffet included in the breakfast-inclusive arrangement. There is also a bar for the evening, plus coffee when a full meal is not what you need. Picnic lunches are available, useful for days built around an excursion rather than a leisurely return to the restaurant.

The outdoor swimming pool sits among flowers, palm trees and dense greenery, with beach towels and pool towels available. The private beach adds another place to stretch out, under a parasol or on a sun lounger, while the terrace and garden give you alternatives when you have had enough sand for the day.
