Pura Vida Housereef, Dauin: Philippines' Black Sand Macro Haven

The Pura Vida Housereef begins directly from the beach in Dauin, offering a shore entry that leads you over gently sloping black sand. This dark, volcanic substrate creates a dramatic backdrop, highlighting the vibrant colours of the marine life that thrives here. Unlike typical coral gardens, this environment demands a shift in focus from expansive vistas to the intricate details of the seabed, where every small movement can reveal a new subject.

As you descend, the topography transitions from shallow seagrass beds, starting around 1 metre, to the main artificial reef structure at approximately 7 metres. This reef is a deliberate creation, incorporating concrete blocks, steel structures, and even small wrecks, including car wrecks and a steel boat. These additions have transformed a once barren sandy area into a complex habitat, providing shelter and hunting grounds for a wide array of benthic invertebrates and other macro critters.

The site is particularly renowned for its camouflaged residents, requiring a keen eye and a patient approach. Frogfish, including the hairy frogfish, are frequently encountered, perfectly blended with their surroundings as they wait for prey. Their stillness and ability to mimic sponges or detritus make them a thrilling find, often requiring a second look to distinguish them from the environment.

Beyond the frogfish, the Pura Vida Housereef is a hotspot for nudibranchs, showcasing an astonishing variety of shapes, colours, and patterns. These miniature works of art can be found crawling across the sand or clinging to small coral patches and sponges. Each dive often reveals species rarely seen elsewhere, making it a continuous exploration for those who appreciate the smaller wonders of the ocean.

One of the star attractions here is the flamboyant cuttlefish (Metasepia pfefferi), known for its dynamic colour changes and mesmerizing patterns. Witnessing these intelligent cephalopods on the black sand is a privilege, as they put on a vivid display of their hues, often while hunting or interacting. Their presence adds a unique dimension to the macro diving experience.

Ghost pipefish (Solenostomus sp.) are another highlight, delicate and almost transparent, expertly mimicking pieces of seagrass or hydroids. Spotting these phantom-like creatures requires patience and a careful search, but the reward of observing their intricate camouflage is immense.
