Hippocampus Beach Resort

Built around the beach rather than behind it, Hippocampus Beach Resort gives you the sort of layout that makes island life pleasantly uncomplicated: rooms set among gardens, the restaurant and bar at the front, and Bounty Beach beyond them. The resort has 18 rooms and a distinctly informal feel, with space to sit outside, a beer garden and tables on the sand.

English, French, German and Dutch are spoken by the hotel team. That matters when your day has involved boats, timings, kit and the occasional discussion about whether you really did see what you think you saw underwater. You can settle into the beach bar, the garden or the shared lounge without having to turn the evening into another logistical exercise.

You are on Bounty Beach, on Malapascua Island in the Philippines, with direct access to a white-sand beach. Sun loungers, parasols and hammocks sit beside the water, while the resort's tables and outdoor seating give you several ways to occupy the hours when the sea is doing the entertaining.

The position is central for the island. Devozen Caf is about 200 metres away, and Ging-Gings Restaurant & Flower Garden, Malapascua Exotic Bar & Restaurant and The Craic House are all within roughly 250 to 350 metres. Logon Beach is about 550 metres away; Bool Beach, Langub Beach and Guimbitayan Beach are each around 1.5 to 2 miles away. Daan Bantayan Sea Side Park is about 9 miles away by the mapped route.

From Cebu Mactan International Airport, allow roughly three to four hours by private transport, including the journey towards Maya and the boat to Malapascua. The final public boat from Maya leaves at 17:30, so the island transfer is not the part of the day to improvise after a delayed flight.

Choose according to how much you value the view and the extra breathing room. The Standard rooms sit towards the back of the resort, while the Superior rooms are closer to the beach and look towards the garden. The Deluxe Beachfront rooms put the sea directly into the equation, which is useful if your ideal post-dive plan involves opening the balcony door and checking whether sunset has started without leaving the room.

All rooms have a private bathroom, a balcony or terrace, Wi-Fi, towels, a safety deposit box and either air conditioning or a fan. The Deluxe and Superior categories also have a minibar. Air conditioning is the practical choice when you return warm, salty and ready to sleep; the fan option suits you if you prefer a more open, less mechanically chilled night. Soundproof rooms are available, and daily housekeeping keeps the routine simple.

The rooms are arranged in three buildings around a maintained garden, with upper floors reached by stairs and some units on the ground floor. There are two single beds in each of the listed room categories, making them workable for dive buddies as well as couples. Children of any age are welcome, although cots and extra beds are not available.

The full-service Hippocampus Bar and Restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner on the beach, on the terrace, in the open air or indoors. The menu crosses European, American and Asian cooking rather than committing you to one narrow style: think Caesar salad, the Hippo burger, Western breakfast, pork chop, homemade Hawaiian pizza, vegetarian pasta, lumpia with soy reduction, granola and burnt French toast.

Breakfast is included, which is the useful bit when you have an early boat to catch. You can also have breakfast in your room, order packed lunches and request special-diet menus. Room service is available, though no continuous snack service or late-dinner schedule is given, so do not build a midnight feeding strategy around it.

There is one named bar: Hippocampus Bar, a beach bar with a small adjoining bar and a beer garden facing the dive centre. Beanbags are set out on the sand for the 16:00 happy hour, with sunset in front of you and live music or evening entertainment on selected nights. The bar also hosts acoustic performers, bands and themed events such as Halloween and Oktoberfest. For a quieter meal, the upstairs restaurant space is used for private events and rainy evenings, while candlelit dinners can be arranged on the beach.

The beach is the main piece of downtime here, and it is properly set up for it: loungers, parasols, hammocks, palms, tables and beanbags beside the water. After a morning in the sea, you can move from salt water to shade without having to search for a pool or invent a wellness programme. Massage services are also available when your shoulders have decided that carrying dive gear was a personal insult.

For a more active afternoon, the resort offers snorkelling, stand-up paddleboarding, kitesurfing and other on-site water sports. Island excursions include Kalanggaman Island, local tours, sunset cruises, a walk towards North Beach, visits to local villages and a snorkelling tour around Malapascua. Hiking and wildlife observation are also available as part of the island's land-based activities.

Evenings can stay outdoors with a drink and live music, or shift towards the beach for a candlelit dinner. The combination suits couples well, but it also gives you somewhere to put the non-diving member of a travelling party while you are out chasing the day's underwater business.

You can arrange an airport shuttle with the resort, including private transport from Cebu and the boat connection from Maya. The journey involves a road transfer and a boat, and the last public boat from Maya leaves at 17:30. If your flight lands late, organise the island connection rather than assuming the next step will sort itself out. The resort can also arrange a private transfer that reaches the beach directly.

Check-in runs from 14:00 to 00:00, and check-out is from 07:00 to 11:00. You need photo identification and a credit card at check-in. Luggage storage, private check-in and check-out, daily housekeeping, laundry and a safety deposit box are available. Wi-Fi is free throughout the resort, although island connections can be less dependable than your phone would like.

Bring cash in small denominations for the journey and the island: there are no ATMs on Malapascua. The property accepts cash, and payment arrangements can also include bank transfer, PayPal or card payment. Power sockets are American-style two-pin outlets without an earth, so pack an adaptor. Pets are welcome, and the resort has no age requirement for check-in.

The resort uses sustainable bamboo in its decoration and energy-efficient lighting. It also encourages you to bring reusable water bottles, with refill options available at the bar.

That is a modest, practical approach rather than a grand environmental manifesto: use less disposable plastic, make the fittings work harder and keep the beach setting central to the way the resort operates.
